Questions about a breeder in Louisiana

Breeder Talk
  • We moved to Louisiana from Tennessee, I came across this add in one of local papers. Does anyone recognize this person? I lost Mo last year, and in the future, I will be looking for a friend, but I do NOT want to buy from a person that is not known to the community. I have found a few that have ties to other breeders in the community, but I am not sure about this person.

This person placed an ad three weeks ago. Please let me know, I don't feel I am ready right now, but I will be someday and we will be here for about three years. (My husband is in the

P.S. i have been checking the BRAT website and I am finding few that match my family. I have a 10 year old and another female dog.

  • OPPS I must have deleted the rest of (my husband is in the military)

  • Nope, this person does not ring a bell. And there are no Carols listed in Louisiana in the BCOA roster, nor anyone with that location. Most responsible breeders are members of the Basenji Club Of America.

  • Finding the right breeder for you is the first important step in getting a great match for your home. Hopefully, your experience will be as wonderful as mine have been. My breeders are great, lovely dogs and I email or talk to them on a semi-regular basis. When I'm in town, I'm welcome to stay at their homes and my dogs LOVE to see them again. A good breeder will want updates - good and bad updates. Personally, I've never heard of the person you mentioned, but that doesn't mean much. However, I do not see that person listed here:

    http://www.basenji.org/PUBLIC/BreederDirectory.htm

Which is a great place to start looking. Another place to meet/see basenjis and their people is at a dogshow.

click on the Conformation tab and pick out states near you.

  • I also have never heard of the person you have listed. And as already noted they are not a member of BCOA and most responsible breeders are….

Regardless of who you go to, you need to first verify health testing. You need to know the registered name and number of the sire and dam and then you can check it out on the OFA site for health testing.

Agilebasenji has give great links and ideas for finding a responsible breeder.

  • Thanks for all of the replies. I am going to find a breeder that is listed on one of these sites. I didn't think that this person was reputable since there was hardly any information listed on the puppies.

I assume you mean for next winter's litters ? Nothing available at all right now - all this winter's crop will have been promised long since and be leaving the nest soon if they aren't already resettled. However, if you email me (see signature block - email addresses are on the websites) I will send you a list of Breed Club secretaries.

@cheryl-goodman - Have you talked to your girl's breeder? Have you completed all health testing and recorded it with www.offa.org as public record, especially DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA? Have you done any showing or performance events with your girl?

I understand what you are talking about. I have actually talked to someone about leasing one of my dogs. But, it is with the intent of me sending him overseas for a few years then getting him back after he has been used for breeding an been able to have a wonderful show career over there. As Pat and Lisa said, this is not common in the US. Personally, I would want to know WHY they want two dogs. Training two Basenjis is NOT the same as training two Afghans or Beagles. I could see wanting to move to a less hairy breed, as she has uber amounts of hair in her place I am sure! You have to think… do your puppy to be the one that gets the short end of the stuck and you get it back and have to "fix" what wasn't done in raising that you would have done? There are so many what-ifs to ponder to decide if this is really the route you want to go. Also, you have to know that if she gets a male and a female, the likelihood of an accident is always there... so you would want to make sure if the other is a carrier, yours MUST be a clear, and vice versa. Better to be safe than sorry. You can email me off the boards if you want, I might be able to help you.

@irena: If the brindle female carrie a tri gene, there could be a trindle, couldnt be? Yes, if the brindle carries the Tri recessive gene, then they can have trindles. Also because the sire is a Tri, the pups will have the Tri gene

@Nemo: Here's the link. http://www.basenji.org/learn/ Go to "screening breeders" at the top. That is a great list…and great explanations of why those questions are important.

@Vanessa: We use those dog bath whipes that you can purchase from the local pet store. They work great. Baths are horrible in our house and I often am also taking a bath with our boy since he flings about in the tub. I get soaked! It just isn't a good experience. LOL Here is a great item that anyone can install on their shower for giving baths… and if you have an enclosed shower stall or bath, just get in with them... http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=394&gift=False&mscssid=3819DB8DB28D4BD090FED7D7C151F99B
