Carrie, that was a great post 🙂 But sometimes the best information still falls on deaf ears.

This thread makes me think that someone is trying to rile people up.

I agree however, I think we have all kept our "heads" with the response…:)

And Carrie, I agree that was a great post (blush)

Absolutely, Pat…a very civil thread...I have had to sit on my hands 🙂

  • @pedro:

but i would like to get another one for a play mate instead of taken him to the dog park!!. if you know or find anyone that has one kinda cheap, a blk& wht female, please let me know & i will get my boy and the girl fixed!!. just need a play mate for him one like him!, he's picky around other tepys of dogs!! is that common too!!!!!?

If you don't want to pay for a basenji from a breeder, and you just want a playmate, you could rescue a BRAT dog. BRAT basenjis are cheaper than a basenji from a breeder and are already spayed or neutered and up to date on shots. However, they are not health tested, you may never know where that dog came from and what kind of crazy temperament or health issues it may have.
The advantages of shelling out so much for a basenji from a breeder include: lifelong support, the breeder will take the basenji back if it doesn't work out in your home, and full disclosure of health issues. Responsible breeders are also always happy to find a home that is willing to show, lure course, do agility, etc, so they will be more than happy to teach you and mentor you in new activities.
My first two were cheap ($400), but I don't know anything about them other than the Fanconi status (which I did myself). Lola is not even AKC registered, so even if I wanted to, I can't show her. I can't even do research on my own through the basenji pedigree database because Lola's dam isn't on there.
It was well worth paying double for Callie (which is average price for a good quality, well bred basenji). I know about her pedigree, and her health. I'm also in contact with not only Callie's breeder but also Callie's sire's breeder and Callie's dam's breeder. So I can keep up with Callie's grandparents as well, and if any weird health issues appear, then I can look out for those in her. Just like with any purchase, you usually get what you pay for. You're not going to find a brand new BMW, fully loaded for $300, nor will you pay $50,000 for a 1998 Toyota Corolla.

I've been thinking the same thing. I can tell from over here that you and Lisa probably have headaches from the effort. I think everything has been very nice and civil.
And thanks, Tanza, both for the compliment and for all your wisdom and help through the last couple years 😃

  • @pedro:

Pedro, there is some frustration on the forum of late. This is the time of year when puppies are ready to go home, and a lot of irresponsible breeders and new puppy owners with petstore puppies come onto the forum to ask the same questions over and over. They are normally just uneducated and naive, but its frustrating to the long time breeders on here to deal with this every year. They know the majority of those puppies will live frustrating lives because their new owners don't know what they've gotten themselves into, and a lot of those puppies will end up shuffled around between owners and shelters until they land in a BRAT foster home or a kill shelter.
Some of your innocent questions almost come across as somebody playing a prank and trying to provoke people. And even if the people come across to you as mean, there is still a lot of valuable information they are trying to convey to you. If they were truly mean, I doubt they'd waste the time trying to educate you. They really are trying to help, in their "mean" way, I promise.

The problem is you are asking the same question over and over… and that is why should you not breed your dog. We have given you all the reasons why you would be better of keeping your current Basenji as a loved pet and if interesed in showing/breeding find a mentor near you and learn about the breed.

I said that because people are repeatedly answering your questions, and you are not listening to the answers. Mean people? Really…everybody who has answered you has put a lot of effort and thought into their responses, without insulting you or your dog. Mean would be to totally ignore you, and write you off as someone trying to stir up arguments.

Who here, posting regularly on this board, responding to this thread is breeding puppies and not fanconi testing? I am curious...

  • Numerous people have said this to you and I am saying it again, PLEASE READ THE POSTS CAREFULLY. The statement that was made is that some advice falls on DEAF ears. Most people who respond to posts begin feel that advice has fallen on deaf ears when the person who asked the question continues to ask the same question seemingly expecting the answer change. The post was also about forum threads in general. Many people come here not for advice but for validation and so when they do not get the answer they want they just keep asking the question hoping to find someone willing to validate the decision they have already made. That would be deaf ears.

  • i would if there was a mentor close by , but there isn't!!. and im trying to learn as much as i can!. and i'm not trying to prank anyone!!. but i do know a breeder that i'm going to talk to that breed's cattle dogs'. and shows them too. but if my boy's test come back that he's clear or a carrier, i'm still not sure what i'm going to do. but if i do breed him i would have every puppy test.!, or i might just get me 2 more rescue basenji's . but the show thang i just don't get still! sorry but call me stupid or just plaine brain dead. !but i don't see the point of now showing a basenji and people teling me not to breed because of that.! i ?m for sure going to put him in an obediance class just so i can get to know my basenji better . but the thank is people don't have to be mean to thers when there asking a question about the breed!.

  • so what, you breed but you don't fanconi test them>?? why not do testing???

  • Who are you talking to? Every single person who has responded to you tests. And several don't breed.

Have you check www.basenji.org for a breeder near you, there are breeders in MI and states close to MI? Remember, many of us have mentors that are not next door… and sometimes you have to travel a bit...

  • i have tested him and im waiting for the results but i'm still being told not to breed him., because i dont show him. what is that??.

  • @pedro:

so what, you breed but you don't fanconi test them>?? why not do testing???

If you're referring to my post about Lola's health testing, what I said was, all I know about her health are the results of her Fanconi test. Even though she is clear, I still spayed her. She seems to be in fine health from what I know just from owning her the last 2 years, but she could have other health issues that appear later in life. She can not be bred at this point, so no further health testing needs to be done as far as for breeding goes (although I may choose some health testing for my own piece of mind)
Callie comes from a reputable breeder. Both of her parents are from reputable breeders. Both of her parents have tested clear for Fanconi, but I still had her tested anyway just to confirm she is definitely clear. She has not had any further health testing at this point, but we are not currently working on breeding her. We are currently showing her and lure coursing her. Once she has completed some titles, we will do further health testing if we want to breed her. But she has a LOT to offer the breed. Multiple breeders and professional handlers at lure coursing and dog shows have complimented her conformation, and although basenjis have a reputation in the coursing community as being poor runners and nasty dogs, a judge complimented both her running style and temperament this weekend when she ended up being just 2 points shy of the winning dog for best in event. She also has the most laid back, even and calm temperaments. She gets along very well with other dogs, and loves strangers. She also comes from healthy lines. She has a lot to contribute to the basenji as a breed.

LVoss offered to introduce Pedro to a great breeder in MI…and I can think of about five BCOA breeders right around the Detroit area...but they may not be listed in the breeder listings on the webpage. And, yeah...Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario have a bunch of great breeders as well. It isn't hard to find a great mentor in our area, if you do a little research.
