  • My Skeeter is 17 years 2 and 1/2 months old. I have had her since she was 2 months old. She has gotten so skinny and is frail but she still eats and drinks and lets me know when she needs to go out. I have to keep her on a leash now because she tends to take off and we live out in the country but the other day she went down our driveway and out onto the gravel road. I'm not sure she knows where she is any more but she does find her way back. She can't see very well but her hearing is still pretty good, She always did have selective hearing. She has been a treasure and I love her dearly. I know she can't be here much longer and my goal is to keep her as comfortable as possible. She doesn't exhibit any signs of being in any kind of pain. It is my constant prayer that she will just slip away in her sleep and I won't have to make the decision to put her down. She was very sick 3 years ago and was diagnosed with a brain tumor and kidney failure but on the advice of a friend, I stopped any food or treat that had red dye in it and she stopped having seizures immediately and hasn't had one since.

  • My buddy, Kenji, just passed today. He was just a tad over 17.5 years old.

  • Lucky boy, to have enjoyed your company for so many years. Its never easy and the older they get, the more difficult it is to say goodbye - especially to such a gallant old gentleman. Hang in there -

  • Thank you. It definitely has been tough. Coming home from work, not seeing him and knowing that I won’t be seeing him anymore is rough. He’s been very good to me. A handful, but very good. I’d definitely get another Basenji one day

  • I am sorry. As long as they still happy. It
    still isnt enough

  • Sonic is 14 yrs old

  • We've had two Basenjis live to 17, one only got to age 3 before she died from cancer and our last one died last year aged 14 1/2 but he had been I'll for 7 years with epilepsy, went blind and also developed kidney disease and finally succumbed from a combination of all plus a moth tumour. However, he was the best tempered and softest Basenji you could imagine. We still miss him terribly.

    Hi Roseys Mom.

Just an FYI: this post was started by @Roseys_Mom in 2006. I have no idea why, but she hasn't logged back in to the Forum since then. Every year or so, the thread grows. It seems to have taken on a life of it's own. :) I'm sorry to hear that you had to return your little girl due to illness and hope you find a new little one to cuddle with.

  • Well I'm not - if you take on a dog it's your responsibility to look after it, you can't just send it back to a rescue centre when the going gets tough. Dogs are sentient creatures not toys to be discarded when the owners gets fed up with them.

Nor am I ! You take on a dog, that dog is your responsibility for its life - or yours. Throwing it back onto a rescue centre - I'm frankly appalled. Are you expecting someone else to take it on ? Or are you just sentencing it to a lonely end ?

That animal trusted you - such a betrayal -

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
