New here to learn about Fanconi's

    My name is Crystal from Pa I have a great dane that we have just got test results back fom Penn State and he has Fanconi's.I am hoping that I meet with others who also have dogs with Fanconi's.I am trying to learn all I can about this so I can do what is right for him.His name is Brock he just turned 7.

    You will want to make sure that your vet has a copy of the Fanconi Protocol. On the last page is contact information Dr Steve Gonto who developed the protocol, if you have any questions, he is a great resource.

    Thank you so much for the info.The vet and I have a copy of it and last week he started the protocol.I will try to contact Dr.Gonto.Brock is 130pds. so I am hoping we have the dosage of things correct for him because of his size.

    Definitely contact Dr Gonto, he will be able to help you make sure the dosages are right.

    Hi cm3, my basenji Tayda was diagnosed with Fanconi in November of last year. Dr. Gonto is a great resource and has helped LOTS and LOTS of Fanconi afflicted animals… not just basenjis and not just dogs! There is also a Yahoo group for Fanconi (look on yahoo groups) that has a lot of information as well...

    Feel free to ask any questions...Dr. Gonto would be best for dosage information but there are other day to day things about Fanconi that we can help with. How to hide pills, how to manage the increase in water consumption and peeing, etc etc... there is a private fanconi list on this board, but i don't think many people are on it.

    Good luck and let us know how things are going.

    Hello again after a very long absence!! My 'chewing' boy now leaves his coat alone - his Mum (now spayed) wears his old hand-me-down coat, and he has his onw snazzy camoflage polar fleece jumper that I made. Can't possibly have it off thankyou!! His half-brother Jerry had his first coat on today - also a 'chewer' - we'll see if it is still on in the morning. Jerry's sister Chloe also got one on today after I managed to keep her still enough to pull it over her head!! Jerry is NOT allowed to touch it thank you!! @kiwir: The thing that annoys me is that he always wore a coat as a puppy - he's just turned 12 months now. But boys being boys, in the last few weeks he thought Mum had come back in season (she hadn't!) so in frustration he gradually chewed her coat - from the back forward - left the polar fleece around her shoulders and chest and neck. And the silly girl just let him - looking at him indulgently - "My boy" I tried making them without the polar neck (designed to stop chewing of the front) - or reinforced them with thick cotton tape - and that lasted a little longer. Now he just looks at me with those eyes saying "Hell, I'm freezing Mum!"

    Welcome Jackie. The ideas about leaving Akila alone for a short time and then lengthening the time have worked in the past for us. The soft things with familiar smell also should help. One other trick we have tried is to leave a TV or radio on at low levels. Talk radio or TV seems to work, but not too loud! Welcome back to the wonderful world of Basenjis Tom

    @mauigirl: Okay I actually went and found the e-mail I sent in to order the collar. The collars are from Northwind Catalog. Their medium collar is adjustable from 10" to 16" On the first collar I ordered I requested that it be 3" smaller than the medium size (Zip, girl), and the second I ordered I asked it to be 2" smaller (Riley, boy, bigger). In hindsight the medium as is would have been fine. On both of our dogs the collars are adjusted to just about as big as they can go so 13" on Zip and 14" on Riley (his is snugger going over his head but still loose around his neck). And the allowance looks to be 3" (that extra loop in a martingale that make it instantaneously adjustable) Sorry that took me so long, I ended up staying at work til 1am that night! Thank you very, very much !! It's past midnight now so I'll check it in the morning. Greetz UPDATE : Yes, they are the right size !:D

    Giza swam in the Atlantic once when we were out walkin' at low tide and the tile came in. The Atlantic in Canada is pretty cold!
