Thanks

  • I want to thank you for the information I have learned just by reading your posts. Now I know Im not alone in some of the behaviors. Dont get me wrong I love her to death, I've learned I cant treat her like a normal dog. If I dont lock the screen door she jumps up and hits the handle with her paw and out she goes. She gets into the cubbard where her treats are. I had to move them. The only time she makes a sounds is when she hears something outside or in the middle of the night. She will jump on me and wont leave me alone until i get up. I like that. I feel safer to know that no one can sneak around. She lets me know someone is here before they knock. My kids love her too. They say Lei Lei is thier little sister. I just wanted you guys know i have enjoyed the pics and the comments you have about your own babies.

Yup… sounds like you're a typical Basenji mom :D We are a little crazy, but it's okay. It's a good crazy and we have good company. :-)

@abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

@julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

@nyoung15 - Thanks, is she registered with AKC? Would love to see her pedigree if you care to share?

@Motala - That is good that you talked to Jan and glad to hear that she had not been spayed. I still think that your Vet and you should connect with Dr. Gonto about your girl's blood work and blood gas results and if he has any thoughts about it.

Sharron is sooo right. I dont know if we will ever have a puppy again. Older rescue dogs just seem more our style now. Everybody loves a puppy but our older girl is just a joy and has not caused as many stresses yet. Youngandtired, I am sorry to hear that you may have an affected Basenji. I know how devastating it can be when they start spilling sugar. Our Marley was 5 when she was finally diagnosed. Our vet sent us to a specialist who was not very optimistic at first. But once she realized that we were going to do everything we could including learning as much as we could she really turned around and was very helpful. Once you start treating Fanconi it just becomes a routine. It was fairly easy and you start to appreciate every day you have with your pooch. The only hard part was the days leading up to the blood testing which we did every 3-6 months. We just didnt want any of the lab values to get worse but if they did we knew we would just deal with it and keep on moving forward. We treated Marley for 7 years. I wouldnt have changed a thing.

Wow - your 5th! See I had a sense there you had some major B experience ;) We picked up Jack early that day, think we might have been the first to arrive, and only met one other man picking up a little girl, Stella, he lived in NY city I think. I think there was another couple arriving just after we left for the other little boy in the litter, that might be who you saw. I tell you when I walked in, I was just completely in awe of all those precious pups! So tiny, I just did not picture so tiny! We are on Doris's list for a little girl if we are lucky out of a breeding this fall. Jack needs a playmate!!! Well so nice to connect with you and hope to continue to do so. Good luck with your shows!
