Grumpy old man drinking his own pee

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Moses, my 15 yo male, has started to drink his own pee. Not the whole puddle but a couple of laps, then he walks off. Last December his blood work showed he is producing immature red blood cells.

Is his pee making up for minerals or salts he is no longer getting from producing mature blood cells?

  • Max would try to clean up his own pee if he had an accident in my car–but he would try to lap it all up. When he was 15 and starting having incontinence problems and had accidents in the house, I never noticed him trying to lap it up.

  • Dallas will do this when he pees in his crate. However, that is the only time I have ever noticed. I actually have never caught him doing it either, but my mom has. Not to mention, I have come home & my room will smell like he peed but the crate will be dry. I assume that's what he has done. I asked my vet & they said it isn't anything serious that should cause concern.

@Schouiffy: Hey Tanza, No she hasn't had much of anything done as of recent. My parents have had a really wild last 2 years so I think thats contributed to the lack of vet work. Happily, and thanks to Dan, we have an appointment set up for tomorrow morning with the vet. yay. And I'll restrain on the food front. I mean its not awful food, but there are a lot of grains… hmm. It's really kinda difficult to see them at this age, I think this last year as been a hard one for her too... Again.. at her age.. I go back to "if it ain't broke" don't try to fix it… I can tell you that is exactly what I would do... period.... and yes, there might be better.. but at her age... it is not going to make a difference.. again IMO

@yag113: Exactly how I feel. Fortunately I love my vets, it's a husband and wife and they have come to know how I am and always work with me. I have 2 goats and the husband does farm calls. I feel very lucky. I always take the staff chocolates and snacks just in case I feel the need to get obnoxious about something…they will placate me! Thanks again for the input. I adore my dog and it's very cool to talk to people who love basenjis! Sounds like a great Vet practice!!! Let us know how the spay goes, I am sure she will do great!

@Ninabeana26: Yea no kidding! That's why I laughed when a couple months back I read that ad for the basenji puppies where it said "non-shedding, non-barking dog!!!" Yea frickin right! My work pants, sheets, sofa, air, etc beg to differ!!! The only part that is true is "no" doggy odor…

As our Basenjis age we are all confronted with their care… there are tough decisions to be made for sure.. we can all only do what we can to make the remaining time they have with us the best possible.. and not going to extreme measures is many times the most kindest thing we can do... and just make sure they are comfortable .... been there, done that... not easy... but I know that the best care that was in my opinion was given....
