    You need to know the either the registration numbers of the sire and dam or their registered names. Just type one of those into the search feature. If the dog has an OFA record then it will come up so you can see all health testing done and the results. If the dog has no OFA record it will come back with a message that no results can be found.

    There are no results yet. The test were sent out about a week ago.

    I am happy to hear that she is doing the testing and I really hope that she has done at least all of the CHIC tests. I also hope that you will not take home a puppy until you have the results of those tests.

    I also agree with Pat that being "new" is no excuse. The information about basenji health is readily available on both the OFA website and the BCOA website. The CHIC tests are listed on OFA, http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/brdreqs.html?breed=BJ
    The health concerns in the breed along with how to test for them are all described in detail on the BCOA site, http://www.basenji.org

    A buyer should not have to tell a breeder what the health concerns in the breed are nor about the available tests that are available for those concerns. I buyer should know what to ask about a health testing and should seek a breeder who is knowledgeable enough and cares enough about their own dogs and the puppies they are choosing to produce to do the health testing to produce the best puppies possible.

    Can the breeder tell you what the average lifespan of the dogs in you puppy's pedigree is? It is not just about doing the health testing. It is also about knowing if there is longevity in the family lines, and knowing what the temperaments of the dogs in the pedigree is.

    A pedigree won't tell you much unless there is verifiable health data on OFA or you talk to someone who knows the dogs in the pedigree. There are some of on this list who are very familiar with many dogs and do a lot of pedigree research.

    You really need to discuss the pedigree of your pup both sire and dam with your pup's breeder. You need to ask if the dogs in the pedigree are alive or deceased. If deceased, at what age and what was the cause? The breeder should be able to answer these questions for a 4-5 generation pedigree.

    If you know the name of the dam, you can probably look up her pedigree at http://pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com but again you will need to talk with someone who knows the dogs in the pedigree for it to be useful.

    ya actually when you put it that way, that is true. I wasnt thinking when i said that, i appologize. its just a toss up which ones are carriers and which are clear. I forget you can get clears. I just wish there was a way to breed more lines without getting carriers. But ya im sorry i shouldnt have said that, carriers do offer an array of genetics necessary to the breed.

    @khanis: Pat…....... that line means that if your puppy is out of two fanconi clear parents, it doesn't need to be tested to find out whether or not it will ever get Fanconi... I should have been more clear, as of course we know that I am aware of what should/should not require testing. If anyone wants that article, feel free to email me [bennyburnerbono at aol dot com] and I can send it in a word document. I have another one as well…. having bred and lived with Fanconi Affecteds, I have had my eyes opened far wider than ever imagined to this disastrous disease! Kathy, I think that many of us have had our eyes opened really far wide… not only about Fanconi but about the practice of some breeders that many would consider "responsible"..... Sad as that is.... Thanks for posting that article... it is very well done... and should be an eye opener to many....

    @BasenjiByTheBay: Thank you all for the help translating this info. Yes, I think we will register her with the project and have her tested. My impression was that there had been no testing. The woman we got her from had never heard of Fanconi and I haven't found anything on the breeder- except now on Sally's site, where he just seems to have Fiji's Sire and Dam. This forum is so incredible! So sad the people out there that don't know about the health concerns in a breed and just sell for profit… but you can learn about them at www.basenjihealth.org or www.basenji.org Chances of you finding anything out about the breeder would be slim, I would think…..

    @Terry: I heard a rumor, wondered if anyone knows if it's true. The rumor was that an affected dog has been identified with 2 clear parents. Pat, I know you're usually up on this… Terry That seems to be the case, Lisa will most likely also chime in. They are now retest that dog along with his parents. As we all know there is always human error and the samples may have been mismarked. I have no doubt in the test (and I know that others will mostly likely use this as a way to discount the test), but I will stand on the over 1100 samples that have already been done and they all seem to be as they should. IMO and I have a sample that was most likely taken at the same time, that there was either a problem when the sample was sent in or there was a problem when the DNA was extracted. At the same time and the sample taken at the same time, there is another dog that is showing as Carrier from two clears… again that is being retested also...
