Help with stitches

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Cammie had surgery on friday. she had a growth removed from her left rear leg. we have tried everything to keep her from licking and chewing at her stitches: eye collars, chew guard spray, socks, bandages, socks and bandages sprayed with things that she doesn't like. crating her just gives her a captive audience for chewing at it. I have to work during the day and my husband works nights so he has to sleep during the day. I've tried what I believe to be everything short of a muzzle and drugs to make her sleep. both of which I prefer not to do. any body else have any suggestion?

  • If the E-Collar is on correctly, she should not be able to reach the surgery site?

  • got a longer e-collar today. if she pulls the stitch again the vet want to use surgical glue on it. don't understand why they didn't use that to begin with. now it is just a matter of getting my husband to comply. i honestly feel that this is just as bad as dealing with a kid who has a cast and wants to pick at it every chance when parents are paying attention

  • on friday we had to board her due to a death in the family while at the vet she had her incision restitched she will be boarded at the vet at least until monday I am considering to have her stay longer just to make sure the incision has a better chance to heal. i work days and my husband works nights so he sleeps during the day and keeping her still and watched closely in nearly impossible so i may just have her stay at the vet until thursday

I have never had a vet not know what breed my dogs are, even though when I got my first one they did not have any others in the practice. My vet immediately began reading up. And when I gave her info, she listened. Foxtails can be very nasty and a vet that lives in an area with them should know you have to REMOVE IT before your dog will get better. So I join the others in begging you to get another vet.

Patty, I can't see why not. It shouldn't be given every day, but now and then. And it should NOT be replaced with their regular food. Eggs have lots of good protein, and it's also a good source for riboflavin, B12 and phosphorus, and even selenium. I've seen only a few dog food brands with riboflavin in it, and I believe it's an important deal for dogs, as well for us humans.

@tanza: Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;) And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff! He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

@JazzysMom: Oh sorry, should have been more clear. I just sent my dogs' blood to Bryan, HE sent it on for testing. I was just replying as to where/how to physically mail the blood, not so much as related to the testing itself. Me too, should have been more clear, I was really responding to etzbseder about the CPP site and submitting blood, didn't even look to see the message was from you…. ggg
