  • @Kananga:

    His name is Kananga.

He is awesome! I want a brindle so badly!

Interesting name. My Shango always gets looks when I tell people his name. Where did you get the name Kananga from?

    Thanks.

I've heard the name before but it's a city in Congo. Considering the breed originates from that area, I thought it'd be a cool name.

It's fun listening to people trying to pronounce it when they see it written.

  • He's a hungry dog today. Gave him 1/2 cup in the morning and just a few minutes ago. He had no problem eating. I'm much more happy that he's eating now. He likes his bone as well. Not too much into the Kong yet.

I just wish he didn't cry in his crate when I put him in there. Feel bad for him but I know it just takes adjusting. He is perfectly fine when I return home after he's been in there awhile. It's just the initial time. To be honest though, this transition went far better than I expected. I was prepared for the worst. This little guy has done very well.

You need to give more descriptive information like age, height, weight, any white on her feet, etc. for people to try to make a better guess. Looking at the photos I would say not Basenji. She looks more like a shepherd mix, especially with the thick tail.

@melly said in New to the basenji breed: She is very smart and listens very well. !! I'll try to post photos when I get more. Still figuring out the settings If you click on the last symbol, the up arrow, you then choose a photo from your computer and it will post it.

They are absolutely adorable to live with! People warned us when we got our first pup (we have mature two sisters now) but we fell in love with the breed and have no regrets. You have to be patient, though, with lots of humour, because they WILL test you.

Adorable face - probably a devil in hiding :p If the biting is clearly play biting a firm NO should work (and see previous comments). If more serious then try bitter apple spray. You definitely want to stop this type before it gets out of hand. Mine (3 yrs old) occasionally will bite (gently and really just a mouthing) when trying to get my attention to play. But you can tell from her expression that she knows she did something unacceptable. Consistent training is the most important thing you could do.
