Sounds reasonable to me, too. Yes, there will be times you need to keep her away from trouble when you can't supervise. As she gets older, you can train her to stay away when you are cooking (if that is your wish) rather than being underfoot, and hopefully you can begin to trust that she won't get into trouble while you are distracted. The problem is when people constantly use the crate instead of observation and teaching the dog what is acceptable. Pups cannot learn the rules of the house whilst confined to a crate!
Water in crate?

We keep our basenji in the crate every weekday - 6-7 hours. Should we have a water bowl/bottle in there with her or does this just make her have to pee more?
-
There is a chance they would have to pee more, but she needs water. I would recommend one of the water bottles if you are worried about her drinking too much. You really do need to leave her with water though, there are problems that occur without enough water.

I don't agree, for 6/7 hours, they can be without water…. they sleep though the night without water.... As long as there is water available in the mornings before she is crated and with meals, she really would be OK... If you do leave water, make it a very small amount..... water bottles can work well, but once they learn to drink from them, they can polish off the entire thing pretty quickly...

I agree with tanza, they should be ok without water for 6-7 hours. When we used to crate Kiya and leave a bowl of water in the crate she would just knock it on the floor.
Now that we do not crate them, they have a free roam of the living room and access to the water fountain. Have not had a pee accident in a while and they are usually home alone for 6-7 hours.

Yeah, I guess I'm still just thinking about the heat. I know it gets really hot inside my room at my parents, and then Medjai does really need water. If you have good AC, or it's not that hot, they could be fine.

Our house has great AC and is very comfortable.
Thanks for the comments.
