Mata Hauri Basenjis

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • Just wondering how many people here have/had a Mata Hauri Basenji? Do they all have such good temperments. Indi is great with kids, dogs, and adapts well to any situation. He is relaxed (for a B) and will let you do just about anything to him.

Hoping I am not the only lucky one!!!

Good temperaments is what a responsible breeder strives for… that and health....

  • My tri Caddie was from them, and she was a joy for 15 years. Great with people, and very good about me taking food away (she loved dirty roadside paper!). Not great with other dogs, but we had two b's, and the other was very aggressive (from a back yard breeder– we dodn't know better then)so she didn't get many chances to socialize. She did have some medical issues, cataracts and seizures as she aged.

  • I got my girl, in 2006, from Debbi Hauri, at a Boston show. This brindle girl, is the sweetest, most loving, gentle animal in my household. I also have 2 other Zenjis, and they are also sweet…but my Mata Hauri girl, Zaharah, is the best temperment Basenji ever!! Consider yourself honored to have one of Debbie's dogs.., as I am honored to have this wonderful show girl. Janice

  • I got Zaharah from Debbie in 2006. She is the sweetest, kindest Basenji ever!! I am showing her now, a bit late, but she is doing some nice winning now, and although I have 2 others from different breeders, my B's have great temperments. I consider myself honored, to have one of the Mata Hauri exceptional wonderful Basenjis. Janice M

  • I got Sonny from Debbie is 2007. It's been such a crazy, wonderful wild ride with him. He couldn't be more sweet, loving & cuddley but he also has a big personality! ;) He loves all people but doesn't have the patience for toddlers. Sonny loves playing with other dogs but decided he didn't want another b living with him! So he's my forever bachelor. He's so much fun and makes me laugh every day. I couldn't imagine life without my nutty B! :D

  • I know, that Debbie breeds for health, and good temperment. You couldn't ask for a nicer lady, or a sweeter Baseji. My applaud to the Mata Hauri line!!!And, aren't these wonderful dogs, lucky, to have owners like us??? There is some 30+ homeless Basenis rescued from abuse here in Florida, some adults some puppies…My heart cries out, for loving homes, such as yours and mine. I moved to FL from Connecticut, and my B's have adjusted so well because of careful breeders, like Debbie. Janice

  • We love Debbie. Zelda came from her, and our first basenji, Curie, came from her lines and mentees.

We will be bringing Zelda to see her on Sunday, in fact.

  • Please tell Debbie we are still waiting for the major win pic for Zaharah, these Florida photographers are slower than dirt. Nothing like the Ashbey brothers! I just love my girl, and can't wait for her to finish! Janice

@jhewell What more is there to say ? You have put it brilliantly ! A friend who has Persian Blues, I think they are called, and Basenjis operates on a two tier level. The cats are fed on the kitchen work-surface and enter and leave the house via the kitchen window onto a garden table. Once outside they are more than able to take care of themselves. Indoors the cats have perches and climbing frames the dogs don't manage to fathom. All is perfectly harmonious. No cat dares come into my garden. They haven't for years, through endless and changing packs of Basenjis. Occasionally one will come down the drive and sit in the sun by the cars but they never try to come over any gate into Basenji home turf. You are going to have endless 'fun' ! Good luck -

All excellent advice, not much I can add. I have a 9 week old Samoyed here and I'm pretty much kangaroo momming him. Right now he's even sleeping with me. Fortunately I have my daughter and her father helping out so I get some breaks, and my daughter does most of it when she's home 2 days a week. Samoyed are extremely people needy, but honestly I am the one who can't bear him being on his own too much this early. Even with doctor appointments, he has a crate in the living room so Larry can take him out to play/potty and snuggle (since I'm usually gone 5 to 6 hrs some days). Easy adjustment.. put in crate, happy voice "i'll be back" and leave. Go out the door and leave alone at least 15 mins. Keep extending it over several days until you are up to a couple of hours. By that point, they do get you will come back. Just no drama, no soothing poor baby stuff... nonchalant. Happy leaving, happy return. Make sure safe toys, chews in crate. If you can arrange it so her work and your's don't quite overlap so he's no alone more than 4 hrs, that would be idea. If not... swap out coming home for lunch break? Good luck.. and please post pictures :) Also, where did you get him? A lot of the basenjis here are related. (My basenji now is a rescue so not related.) It's nice to see the connections though!

Thank you Tanza. I was very curious. ill have to check out AKC. Thank you AgileBasenji. Yes i do live here so it would just be for fun and for some experience. I dont blame you on the points tho because it would be alot of money to not get anything out of it.

My vet, 20 yrs ago didnt' know about fanconi, but did work to learn about it. If you like your vet and think they are "trainable" get them some info from the net. If it doesn't help your dog, it might help a dog in the future.
