Basenjis on Animal Planet

Basenji Talk
  • Last night, on "Animal Planet Hero: Phoenix", they rescued 6 Basenjis (Black/Whites, Red/Whites & Brindles) from a woman's home. Has anyone seen that episode? These B's were so sweet, ;) even though their lives hadn't been too good. They were living in filthy crates. They had urine burns on their feet, way long toe nails and got their 1st bath. The 2 Blk/Whts (looked like Duke) were showcased and featured their foster home owners. They said the reason they liked the Basenji was for the challenge and that they're unique. I was GLUED! See . . . Everything's coming up Basenji! I don't think I've ever seen them on TV before, until now. Glad these guys were rescued. :)

  • they were on animal planet before, on breed all about it, they had an episode on basenji's which starred Lucy's parents. they live in manhatten but now live in new jersey great people with a huge farm and 2 basenji's that they breed, thats how i got lucy = )

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

Our dobes ignore the television, and so does Tilly mainly - unless she hears childrens voices - then she is over at it straight away. There was a popular yoghurt advert a few months ago featuring a young child talking - Tilly would wake up from a deep sleep and rush over to stand with her nose pressed against the screen! I dont tend to watch much TV, but Tilly likes to read books with me - well she sits beside me and pushes her head infront of whatever im reading to get attention. it usually works.

Actually, I think all the Breed All About its are 30 minute shows, so probably 22-24 minutes of content. We have done a search on any new DVR we have gotten and always keep it on there. One of our dogs goes crazy any time we put it on, it is hilarious.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
