My puppy is no longer a puppy.

  • well last week we stayed at my parents house for a week to babysit their dog and we brought our 3 Bs along. everyone was fine and my parents came home yesterday around noon. mia was acting very wierd. she kept laying down and looked really sad. i picked her up and carried her around like a toddler (upright over my shoulder with her legs wrapping around my side) and i put her down and found a nice stain on my WHITE shirt:eek:

so i immediately freaked out because my parents have a very light carpet.. and we tried everything we could imagine.. we used an old cloth baby diaper and a pad.. but we didnt have any safety pins and had to clothes pin it lol maggie and rocky thought it would be fun to chew the clothes pins which unhooked the cloth. so we did the next best thing and got some baby diapers :D cut a little hole for her tail and shes fine. probably the cutest thing ever but it works for now. i cant wait for it to be over and its only just started:(

  • Yup… you have 30 days!

  • Someone told me that you can get these lined pants from Pet Smart that you just put the pad into and it works great. I was saying how when my B, Sahara had her first heat that she would not keep the pad on and I had a time with her. Luckly her appt. for spaying was coming up and I just had to make sure she was not tearing it off. The pants look like a pair of jeans and just go on real easy.

  • I used disposable diapers on Cory because that's what I had around the house. She didn't keep them on for long. I did find the "heavy" bleeding didn't last for long and she kept herself so clean that spots weren't a problem. BUT…we also put old sheets on all the furniture and we only have carpet in the bedrooms and we closed those off.

    Pat

  • yeah shes actually really tolerant of the baby diapers. and so are rocky and maggie, beings that they havent tried to tear them off her or anything yet. i had a hard time trying to pick out a good size though. i stood in the diaper aisle just staring. me and dan we talking about having her fixed like last week.. terrible timing

  • rockys been licking at her legs though, its really weird and his teeth are chattering.. but i thought i read on here once that it could be because of a female in heat?

  • Heather, Make sure Rocky and your girl are not together.
Its going to be a rough month for you.
You will have to be very careful..they are going to want to "get" together.

  • even if he's been fixed?

  • They will drive each other nuts…your poor boy won't have a moments peace.
Also, they can have sex...safe sex...and I do hear that can sometimes cause false pg in the female..
But that can be an old wives tale.
Its just going to be very hormal at your home.
    I sure don't envy you.
Maybe some of the breeders can give you some tips for taking the edge off of both b's.

  • Many Bitches have false preg, regardless if the practice "safe sex"… so IMO, doesn't make any difference.

And while we say it is safe sex, be aware that it is a tie, just like a real breeding and very possible for someone to get hurt.. so for safety sake, when you are not home, keep them apart....

  • Pat, thank you for the input.
I don't know much about intact b's…just what I heard.
I do know they are horney when the "urge" comes on them.

Amen to that!!! They certainly are!!! (horney)

  • I remember when I got an intact female rescue and she came into heat 2 days later.
My b boy was fixed…but she bothered him sooooooooo much I had to put her in a kennel so he could get some sleep.
    Its was shameless!
Worse than cats, and I didn't think ANYTHING Could be worse than that!

  • Heather,
Did you take any pictures? I'd love to see how the diaper fit on her :)

  • Maybe since she just started its different? Mias actually been laying around..very lazy and doesn't seem to want to be bothered. The other two are sniffing at her .

Vanessa… The diaper is hilarious. She doesn't really seem to mind it at all. I went to petco yesterday and it was like 15 dollars for 10 disposble or 5 cloth diapers..I got 30 baby diapers for 8 dollars and she gets a new one everytime she goes out.. Think about how expensive that would be!! The fourth charger we've bought in the past year for our computer has decided to die so unless I can figure out how to upload from my blackberry ill have to post them when we get the new laptop... hopefully soon! Unless I sneak on our old one haha its got maybe 20 minutes of battery left and is for "emergencies" :)

    Heather,
I found a pair of super cute under-roos from this website called sassypup.com
    http://www.sassypup.net/Puppy-Diaper-Sassy-Zebra-Hearts-Rewashable-Dog-Diaper-For-Girls-p-16525.html
I will be giving these a try in the next few mts when our girl goes into heat.

  • The problem I have found with that style, which is very common is that if you can not try it in store, you may find that the tail hole is not positioned correctly or is so big that they may as well have remained naked. I really haven't been very satisfied with the products I have been able to purchase in stores or over the web.

Also, if you plan to leave these on your girl when you are not home be prepared to come home to utterly chewed and shredded doggy undies. Rally is adamant that she is to be a naked girl and strongly feels that no girl should suffer the mortification of underwear. I suppose that is why she chews my undergarments every chance she gets.

An Ibizian hound that comes to agility wears womans control top panties with a tail hole cut out. The woman cuts them so they are just the control top part. Unfortunately, our hounds are a bit to small for that trick.

  • Exactly how mine were…. they totally refused to wear anything.... and would make sure I got the point when there was nothing left but tiny little pieces all over....

  • I must be lucky then. Hahaha Mia doesn't take them off unless she wakes up before me while she is in her cage. The other two leave her diaper alone too. Much to my surprise.

  • All I need to due is apply tea tree oil and they won't touch it. Works great! Its my secret weapon. :)

Neutering is not going to help - training is. But a good trainer will train YOU to deal with the dog. If a trainer can get him to behave but you can't - there is little to be gained from paying out money. This is something you should never have allowed to happen, but since it has, I think you should deal with it and @JENGOSMonkey has given you a good idea to start you off. Withdrawing treats is a good idea, but also, get up and walk away. He could be biting to get attention and therefore you withdraw the attention at the first sign of a bite, with a firm NO.

@lustopher said in Puppy and confined spaces: it's about time he starts to also understand that he doesn't always have to leave his chewing to check out what we're doing It doesn't happen often, but I agree with @tanza on this. He's a baby and it is pretty "normal", but also remember that dogs are pack animals. You, your significant other, and the pup are now his "pack". If you are in another room and he comes to look for you, I would suggest just ignoring him. If he comes to you, give him a pet and go back to whatever you were doing. He will either go back to the room he was in, or settle down somewhere in the room you are in. Both of which should be acceptable. This is something that may be less frequent as he gets older, but probably never disappear entirely. Which is a good thing, I think.

Your story is so similar to mine, though mine is two and has not changed. Totally destructive. Even though he has had lots of training, gets mental stimulation, and goes to the dog park every day, he is no longer fun to be around. My brand new wood floors and furniture are ruined, my car is scratched up and dirty and he refuses to come to me. It is cold here, too, and when I took him to the park yesterday (all ice, snow, mud and cold water) he would not leave…even after all the other dogs left. The only way I caught him was that his paws were beginning to freeze and he could only keep three on the ground at a time. It was dark by then, I was nearly frostbit myself. I have had several GOOD dogs in the past. This one has been to the "best" trainers in town, has a great vet and a nice home. I don't think it would be ethical to adopt this monster out, so I am considering putting him down myself and cut my losses, both emotional and financial. I just wrote a note to the breeder to see if they have similar problems with the dogs they sell. I had such high hopes.

Our B Kairoe did the same thing after getting his shots. We massaged the area where the needle went in and sure enough he gave out a yelp. I relate it to when we get a shot and the pricked area can become quite sensitive for a few days and up to a week.

When Stella was a pup, she would get quite mouthy and pushy, so we would restrain her movement (hold her to the floor) until she relaxed and calmed down. She would only get a little aggressive, but we both thought that it was just crazy puppy behavior. We have found that the restraint was enough to show her that she is not in charge, and she needs to do as we say.
