My puppy is no longer a puppy.

Behavioral Issues
  • even if he's been fixed?

  • They will drive each other nuts…your poor boy won't have a moments peace.
Also, they can have sex...safe sex...and I do hear that can sometimes cause false pg in the female..
But that can be an old wives tale.
Its just going to be very hormal at your home.
    I sure don't envy you.
Maybe some of the breeders can give you some tips for taking the edge off of both b's.

  • Many Bitches have false preg, regardless if the practice "safe sex"… so IMO, doesn't make any difference.

And while we say it is safe sex, be aware that it is a tie, just like a real breeding and very possible for someone to get hurt.. so for safety sake, when you are not home, keep them apart....

  • Pat, thank you for the input.
I don't know much about intact b's…just what I heard.
I do know they are horney when the "urge" comes on them.

Amen to that!!! They certainly are!!! (horney)

  • I remember when I got an intact female rescue and she came into heat 2 days later.
My b boy was fixed…but she bothered him sooooooooo much I had to put her in a kennel so he could get some sleep.
    Its was shameless!
Worse than cats, and I didn't think ANYTHING Could be worse than that!

  • Heather,
Did you take any pictures? I'd love to see how the diaper fit on her :)

  • Maybe since she just started its different? Mias actually been laying around..very lazy and doesn't seem to want to be bothered. The other two are sniffing at her .

Vanessa… The diaper is hilarious. She doesn't really seem to mind it at all. I went to petco yesterday and it was like 15 dollars for 10 disposble or 5 cloth diapers..I got 30 baby diapers for 8 dollars and she gets a new one everytime she goes out.. Think about how expensive that would be!! The fourth charger we've bought in the past year for our computer has decided to die so unless I can figure out how to upload from my blackberry ill have to post them when we get the new laptop... hopefully soon! Unless I sneak on our old one haha its got maybe 20 minutes of battery left and is for "emergencies" :)

    Heather,
I found a pair of super cute under-roos from this website called sassypup.com
    http://www.sassypup.net/Puppy-Diaper-Sassy-Zebra-Hearts-Rewashable-Dog-Diaper-For-Girls-p-16525.html
I will be giving these a try in the next few mts when our girl goes into heat.

  • The problem I have found with that style, which is very common is that if you can not try it in store, you may find that the tail hole is not positioned correctly or is so big that they may as well have remained naked. I really haven't been very satisfied with the products I have been able to purchase in stores or over the web.

Also, if you plan to leave these on your girl when you are not home be prepared to come home to utterly chewed and shredded doggy undies. Rally is adamant that she is to be a naked girl and strongly feels that no girl should suffer the mortification of underwear. I suppose that is why she chews my undergarments every chance she gets.

An Ibizian hound that comes to agility wears womans control top panties with a tail hole cut out. The woman cuts them so they are just the control top part. Unfortunately, our hounds are a bit to small for that trick.

  • Exactly how mine were…. they totally refused to wear anything.... and would make sure I got the point when there was nothing left but tiny little pieces all over....

  • I must be lucky then. Hahaha Mia doesn't take them off unless she wakes up before me while she is in her cage. The other two leave her diaper alone too. Much to my surprise.

  • All I need to due is apply tea tree oil and they won't touch it. Works great! Its my secret weapon. :)

So you think…ggg.... I will be waiting to here what happens when you put panties on your girl.... go out and come home.... Tea Tree Oil or not...

But you are right, Tea Tree Oil does work.... but the "smell" "taste" only lasts 2 to 3 hours....

    Hahahahaha!
    Maybe duct tape :o
Yeah…never underestimate a Tri. I just never know about her.

LOL, took the words right out of my mouth…we want pictures of how the panties look after you leave her with them on and you're not around to watch her. :D :D :D

With Ruby, anyone I talked to about the panties said, skip it because they'll get shredded and clean up after her...so that was what I did. Wasn't really a big deal. I have wood floors, area rugs that are easily washed, and blankets I put on the furniture. :D

And with Ruby, I know exactly how it would have gone w/panties (not good) just based on how she was about me checking that area to see if she was bleeding.

Neutering is not going to help - training is. But a good trainer will train YOU to deal with the dog. If a trainer can get him to behave but you can't - there is little to be gained from paying out money. This is something you should never have allowed to happen, but since it has, I think you should deal with it and @JENGOSMonkey has given you a good idea to start you off. Withdrawing treats is a good idea, but also, get up and walk away. He could be biting to get attention and therefore you withdraw the attention at the first sign of a bite, with a firm NO.

Your story is so similar to mine, though mine is two and has not changed. Totally destructive. Even though he has had lots of training, gets mental stimulation, and goes to the dog park every day, he is no longer fun to be around. My brand new wood floors and furniture are ruined, my car is scratched up and dirty and he refuses to come to me. It is cold here, too, and when I took him to the park yesterday (all ice, snow, mud and cold water) he would not leave…even after all the other dogs left. The only way I caught him was that his paws were beginning to freeze and he could only keep three on the ground at a time. It was dark by then, I was nearly frostbit myself. I have had several GOOD dogs in the past. This one has been to the "best" trainers in town, has a great vet and a nice home. I don't think it would be ethical to adopt this monster out, so I am considering putting him down myself and cut my losses, both emotional and financial. I just wrote a note to the breeder to see if they have similar problems with the dogs they sell. I had such high hopes.

I will second everyone else and just go down to the two meals a day. You can give her a mid day snack like a few cookies. But her poos can be soft because she is eating to much food and causing the slight weight loss because it is just coming out LOL Also like most, my adult only eats 2/3 of a cup a day. With the amount on the bags they are just "recommend" amounts. You have to adjust to what is best for your pup/dog and feed them what works to keep them at an ideal weight.

You're right! My wife and I have animals since childhood and since we are maried, almost 25 years. We are really animal-lovers and we can't stand it when folks take animals, just for their own satisfaction. We once bought a abused Parrot for a lot of money, only to give this bird a better place. I am delighted to her that someone of this forum understands what we are trying to say. And the last thing we want, is that people think that you can establish a good relationship with your Basenji through yelling, hitting etc. That kind of constantly fysicaly and mentaly abusing isn't right for no animal! ;) @Quercus: <<we see="" correcting="" as="" the="" last="" posibility="" but="" we="" believe="" that="" sometimes="" it="" is="" necessary.="">> I don't think you will find anybody here that disagrees with that…at least not that has spoken up about training issues. Corrections definitely have a place...but some folks' form of correction ends up doing more damage than help. Yelling, spanking, etc don't have much meaning to a dog. I think corrections in the form of voice are particularly effective during puppyhood when puppies are learning all about what is acceptable. I think physical corrections with an adult dog who is showing aggression in any form is a mistake.</we>
