Eldorado does litter box train and they were always very successful at it when I visited..I know they line the outside of the box with newspaper too..so I would make sure to do that also so she's as familiar with the process as she can be. I would suggest if you can't get her to start using it for pooping soon to just get her a coat and start outside. The longer she goes without pooping where you want her to the harder it'll be when you need to change it. Bad habits develop fast. I wish I started Oakley outside right away versus litter training. He always would pee in it but he wouldn't poop in it. He got very used to pooping next to the box on the kitchen floor and to this day prefers going on hard surfaces. I know it's hard to imagine potty training outside in this weather but you might be better off in the long run.
I'm not against the litter box, I also have an eldorado pup; I just know the entire process would've been easier and more beneficial to is both if I braved the weather and did it in the first plAce

This group is going to be a great asset to you and your lovely tri.
Welcome. -
Before we had the linked marker test, all an owner or breeder could do was strip test their dog's urine for glucose monthly after the age of 3 years old and hope that the dog never became symptomatic. Responsible breeders tracked their puppies and their health so they knew what they were producing, they used older stud dogs, and they shared their information with people who had related dogs. When a researcher expressed an interest in working with the basenji community, the responsible breeders who had been hit with Fanconi in their lines stepped up and donated their dogs' blood for the DNA databank and supplied thorough health information and pedigree information their dogs. This resulted in a family group of over 200 dogs that allowed the researchers to locate a marker for the disease. Thanks to the now thousands of samples that the researchers have, they continue to narrow in on the gene and we will hopefully have a direct gene test in years to come.
The DNA Marker Test was released on July 17, 2007 so all basenji breeders could use the test prior to the 2007/2008 breeding season so no basenji puppy need be born affected by this disease. Though the basenji community has done a lot to get the word out, many websites, and posts on email lists and this forum, there still is a lot of misinformation out there. The DNA Marker Test can be done as soon as a puppy can be give 3 cc's of blood. The results of the DNA Marker Test are publicly available so anyone considering purchasing a puppy can check if the parents or puppy has been tested by typing in the name or registration number of dog of interest into the OFA search engine, http://www.offa.org Not only does the OFA database show that the dog was tested but the date the test was run and links to parents, siblings, and offspring if tested.

To get your boy DNA tested go to www. basenjihealth.org You need to register your boy on the CPP site (that is free) and all the information is there for how to do the DNA test and get the sample sent to U of Mo. There is no other place in the US that does the DNA test at this time, so other than your Vet drawing the blood, that is all your Vet can do.
I do know that as of right now, Phil has not DNA tested his breeding dogs, so the sire and dam of your pup has not been tested.

That is the info you need to know. The 4th catagory is Indeterminate
The INDETERMINATE means it is between a Clear and a Carrierā¦ which in any case until there is a direct test, that Basenji should be considered a Carrier in any breeding program. -
Oops, I knew that and just forgot the fourth category. For breeding purposes breeders should be treating Indeterminate dogs as Carriers. For pet owners the important information is that an Indeterminate won't become affected.

Tanza, laugh,
I should never try to type when hubby is wanting dinner on the table.
THANK you for the correction. -
Welcome to the forum! What a pretty boy - I especially like the picture of him sitting against the desk.
-
He's from a reliable breeder in Colorado, because unfortunately we didn't find any nearby basenjis in my area.
And thanks for all the comments
From Colorado? What's the name of the breeder? I am from Colorado too!!! BTW, Charlie is very cute!!

OH NO!! I got it. Thanks Pat!
Coz I went thru my BCOA roster, no member by the name of Phil in Colorado
listedā¦.. -
The most important thing is that this pup be DNA tested for Fanconiā¦. he obviously has a loving home.... regardless of were he came from....
-
Yes, she has a two in three chance of having a good report..so fingers crossed she gets a good report.
As things are changing so quickly re b's and health, I would love to see fanconis gone in my lifetime..
What a great thing! -

I totally agree.
As long as it is fanconi clear and have a good temperatment!! -
I totally agree.
As long as it is fanconi clear and have a good temperatment!!Or a Carrier.. as far as Fanconi goesā¦ at least they will never develop Fanconi...
But unless you test, you will not know... it is important regardless of where you got your B from.. And along with others on this Forum... Chiya can tell you it is NO fun having a Fanconi affected Basenji..... period...I too would like to see Fanconi "gone" in my lifetime.. but unless we all work to get the word out and get these PM's and BYB's to test their dogs.. it will never happen.... and Fanconi is just the tip of the iceberg when you talk about health testing... it is important...... and people need to take it serious... In My Humble Opinion....

I would NEVER wish a Fanconi dog on anyone even my worst enemy!!
Living with a fanconi dog is A LOT OF WORK!!The problem with BYB and PM breeders is that they don't care
about health testing before breeding.
So they are increasing the chances of producing more and more
afflicted dogs!
It kills me EVERYDAY to see my Fanconi boy suffering from
the disease. All he does is drinking and peeingā¦He runs away and hides when he sees me approaching with
pills!! -
I also had a basenji with fanconis who I had hide from meā¦made life hell for the whole family, not to mention the b'.
The reason I am so happy to support BRAT is that they are trying to get these b's from kennels that are closing.
Can they get them all..no, can they try, you bet..
Each one out of the breeding pool makes the lines stronger, as the breeders are able to breed clear dogs and we educate the public to the good vs bad breeders..IMO. -
Sharon I didn't know we could test for how basenjis can undermine all the house rules - I must have missed that on the OFA site.
(sorry I just couldn't resist.
-
Well, we know there are house rules and then there are b' house rules.
