Reaction on Rabies Shot!

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Yeh, Lexi had a very bad reaction to K9 Advantix. Never ever using that again!

Lexi actually just last had her rabies vaccination. We were told not to leave her alone for the next 12 hours. She didn't have any reaction, but she did throw up once. :(

    Poor kid…:( :(

  • Hey Janneke.
Will you please keep us informed about your experience with the raw meat diet. BTW, ever heard of the Carnibest frozen raw? Easily available in our countries, not expensive and I read some positive feedback about it.
And keep sending us those great pictures of Mirtillo ! I love them.:)

  • Is he feeling better now?

Carnibest is great. Our other dog got it, and it was the only thing she really enjoyed (except for an occasional sheep heart ;) )
Mirtillo has taste it when he was younger and LOVED it!

I don't think it's really cheap though… 1 kilo = € 3,25 and Mirtillo needs 2 kilos per week.. You can buy 30/70/100 kilo at once and than it's a bit cheaper.. but you need a big fridge :)

  • Well, isn't this a timely post?
So Lexi had her rabies shot on June 21st. It's now June 28 and I've noticed a lump at the injection site. I called the vet to see what they thought and the nurse said it wasn't uncommon- but if she has no other symptoms, that it would just go away. She's not bothered by the knot on her hip, no vomit or "D"… So I'm hoping it will go down soon. Any opinions on this?

    .

Lump is very common to a rabies shot… it will go away in a couple of weeks... and could be up to a month...

  • Wow– that long??
First time she's had a lump.
Is that cause to worry she might have a reaction next time?

  • I guess we have been lucky. Roo got his Rabies shot about 3 weeks ago and was fine. We also used Advantix on him with no issues. With the flooding we have had here recently, the Mosquitos have been terrible. We even stopped walking in the park because they are so bad and will swarm on Roo.

@donc Actually it's not just your opinion. Some serious research is coming out about humans and animals and gut bacteria. We have truly over sterilized to the point our bodies are losing the ability to defend ourselves. LOL on testing for human allergy. I never thought about that! I wonder how often that comes up?

@Buddys: ihope it is a step in the right direction! :) It absolutely is a step in the right direction. The AVMA is one of the nation's leading associations setting the standard for veterinary medical care. Official recognition by the American Veterinary Medical Association that there are cases in which rabies vaccination "poses an unacceptably high risk to the health of the individual animal" provides a powerful boost to our legislative efforts to incorporate medical exemption clauses into the 35 state laws/regulations which currently do not have them.

MINNESOTA Board of Veterinary Medicine issues Rabies Vaccination Guidance Document 3/1/12 http://www.vetmed.state.mn.us/portals/22/RabiesVaccinationGuidanceDocument.pdf **"rabies vaccination certificate should always comply with Minnesota Rule 1705.1146, including displaying the date of vaccination and the rabies vaccine labeled duration of immunity, even if the veterinarian recommends more frequent rabies vaccination" A major victory for Minnesota pet owners thanks to Jane Anderson & Chris Addington, who, with assistance from The Rabies Challenge Fund, have prompted the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine to publish a rabies vaccination guidance document in order to get veterinarians to follow the recommendations of the CDC's Rabies Compendium, to issue rabies certificates accurately reflecting the duration of immunity on the vaccine label, to obtain documented informed consent if administering rabies vaccines off-label, and to have "credible, scientifically-based information….in the possession of the veterinarian and available for review" if the veterinarian chooses to adopt a booster protocol other than that recommended in the Compendium. @nobarkus: I'm too hesitant to try any of the chemical drops with the bad reactions I've seen. Well, actually my vet recommends against topical for my basenji kids. They said that they have plenty of dogs in their practice that got Lyme while on topical. The best line of defense is to look my kids over after they have been outside. I too have heard too many horror stories and I don't want pesticides on my bedding or furniture. Granted I have it somewhat easier as my kids are 2 red & whites and one red brindle…black, dark brindle or tri would be harder to find a tick on.
