The Puggle made me do it

  • My first few days with Zahra I thought that I could leave her alone in the kitchen long enough to take the trash out. Chase, our Puggle is a year old and he has not figured out how to get on top of the kitchen counters! :D

I think she was trying to lego my Eggo waffle.

  • Zahra looks like she's ignoring you. Like toddlers, turn your back for a second and you have to save them (or your things as seen next to your dishes) Thanks for the amusement.

  • I have never seen Sahara on top of my kitchen counters, but I did find her on top of my bedroom dresser. I was so surprised, I don't know how she got up there except I did have some picture containers by the dresser, guess she used them like steps. I have now removed all things that could help her get back up on my dresser. She chewed a cherished item of mine, that I can not replace, ruined it in fact, chewed up the flowers that my porcelain doll was holding, my Mom gave her to me years ago, I was sooooooo mad, but I just fussed at her while she looked at me like I was some mad woman. haha

  • Eos keeps going on the kitchen counter, in my back because she knows it's not allowed, just to help me with the dish washing, it would be a shame to throw out the left over, when I enter the room I know she's done it because she's leaking her leaps and avoid to look at me.
Of the 4 she is the only one to do it!

  • That is a great pic…and so descriptive of the breed!

LOLOL, the easiest fix is to get those popper things you actually buy from pet supply companies. They make loud noises when they jump up. You can also make your own by simply putting a mouse trap in a paper lunch bag. I had a rescue chow/lab here who would stand on the counters to surf, so I got double sided tape and taped the counters. She HATED HATED HATED it and stopped doing it.

  • Debra, thank you for the tip! I'll try it

  • my dog did it once.

I was outside calling in one of my cats, and he bolted out the door, ran around in the neighbor's horse field.. from which my bf had to climb through the fence in his pj's on a sunday morning to catch the dog - in horse poo….all the while I'm still trying to get the cat... my bf puts the dog in the house, and suddenly I see a little wrinkly face in the kitchen window...the window over the counters! he decides to hop up on the counter after running through horse crap... ugh. I pretty much lost it.

so after that, I booby-trapped my counters. I balanced small coffee cans of pennies on the edge. (half on, half off - so if he tried again, it would fall)... he tried, a can fell, scared the bajeezes out of him and he hasn't done it again.

  • Such a nice picture ;) It is true Basenji !!!

  • Thanks for making me laugh. Great photo. Luckily my basenji/whippet hasn't done that yet. She is good at knowing what furniture she can get on and in whose home it is acceptable. I am lucky. Again, loved the pic.

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

@elbrant Yes, she's good an patient sometimes, I've been taking pics of her from day 1 so she's used to it, I'm allowed a couple of mins and no more though.
