Our North Carolina Relatives

  • This weekend me and my mom flew out to North Carolina to visit with some of our basenji relatives. It was fun to get a chance to meet so many basenjis and I love visiting at this time of year because it seems I always get to play with some puppies. Unfortunately, I am really bad about taking pictures so don't have much to share except a very cute picture of the puppy Sin. He is a real cutie and my mom was real tempted to put him in her pocket and take him. I also got a picture of TC who is very sweet though difficult to photograph since the minute she sees the camera she comes and sticks her nose up to the lens.

Is this the breeder in NC that you had mentioned to me like 2 months ago? Carolina Basenjis?

  • Yes, we visited with Suddanly and Sunbird basenjis in North Carolina.

  • And what'd ya think? :) I've chatted with her about possibly getting one of the female pups from their next litter.

  • Oh my!!! What an adorable face on the brindle!!!

  • All her dogs had great temperaments. I got to visit with 16 of her and Carolyn's basenjis. Sue was great, and I got look through lots of her pictures and talk to her about her dogs. If you want specifics, you can email me. My contact info is on my website which is listed in my profile. I did meet both Chase and Mercedes.

Sin is so cute and knows it. I am sure his attitude will serve him well in the show ring and I bet he would make a great agility dog from what I saw. He was also very sweet and a cuddle bug.

  • OMG what a cute puppy!!

  • What an adorable face! It sounds like you guys had a very fun trip to NC!

  • Love the brindle! an Andy pup?
I love the little girl Nadra( http://www.carolinabasenjis.com/puppies.cfm ), so showy!

  • Yes, Sin is an Andy pup. We got to meet Andy also.

  • And that Brindle litter is related to my Mickii x Ricky litter by way of Jerlin's Reckless Ricochet, so again… small world.....

  • Yes, we also got to meet Savvy who is a Ricky daughter and mother of Andy.

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

So - if AJs Human brought it up, again… ;) Both of my dogs have Reveille Boutonniere as great-grandfather, too. Far related, but related :D But I think he isn't that rare in pedigrees…
