  • @JazzysMom:

So, if you do the blood gases, and they come back okay does that mean that the dog is not developing Fanconi YET?

If that is the case, how often would you suggest having blood gases done?

That is how I understand it… I think that then I would go back to the strips, but would strip more then once a month. I would do 4 days in a row per month... and then in a year repeat the blood gases... but again, I stress that is just me.. as Blood Gases are not cheap

  • thanks for the support… and i know that the stress of doing those fonconi strips every month doesn't get any easier with each passing month, but already i can see that there is a strong support here on this site.

good vibes being sent out there!

  • I had heard people were doing the blood gas tests on their "probably affected" dogs. Apache had just turned 2 when I got the results and I started strip testing him immediately. I've already told my husband when he turns 3 I'm taking him in for a blood gas test…I'm wondering if I should do it earlier. I'm still strip testing Chey too even though she came back as "probably a carrier". My feeling is that until they get the actual DNA test, I'm not taking any chances.

And since the strips don't last long, no sense in them going to waste….

Cooper is a rescue of unknown origin (found as a stray, in a shelter for their maximum time, then to an all-breed rescue group). His ears are somewhat offset at resting position and his tail was docked before he was found as a stray, but he otherwise looks and acts like a trindle basenji. We occasionally entertain the idea that he may be part rat terrier or something else of similar size and color, but he has to be at least 75% basenji.

Congratulations, that is great! Ayo sounds like he's doing well. Keep the updates coming. It's great that he's gaining weight. We would love to see some pics of Ayo with some meat on his bones.

@tanza: Not to put any pressure on you or the Vet.. but to me… blood work is one of the most important tools.... and I am surprised that at least even with an appointment next week ... that they didn't take blood while he was there.... If it was me... and I am a "freak" about doing blood panels.. I would have insisted on at least that..... Thanks for letting me know. As Booger & Lola are my first "grown up" dogs (my parents took care of sick dogs growing up & we never had many issues until 1 got cancer), I really honestly don't know all the things I should be looking for or asking about. I will definitely call & ask about that. Booger does seem a LOT better today than he did yesterday, which is good. I don't take this as much of a sign of anything, but it at least makes me feel better knowing he isn't so miserable. He's a lot perkier & more playful. He gave us some playful baroos earlier, too, which is a rare treat!

My girls keep themselves pretty clean. The first heat is usually the messiest, and even then, it isn't too bad. The place I notice it the most is if they sleep in the bed, then I recommend you get a set of DARK sheets and duvet cover ;) I don't care fore the britches, because every female I have used them on got a vaginits infection because they couldn't keep herself clean.
