Wow Some Pet Food Freaks Me Out!!

Basenji Feeding
  • So as I am sure most of you do, I have never let my dogs, cats, birds, or ferrets eat avocado. I have always understood both from research and from my vets that it contains a toxin to most animals. So I was in the pet store yesterday looking for some training treats, and happened upon a brand of dog food that advertises as being high in avocado. I was soo confused. I am wondering if they some how eliminate the persin (toxic chemical in avocado), but I have not had time too look up info on it. Needles to say you really have to check everything you feed your little ones.

  • I am assuming you mean AvoDerm. It has been around for many, many years. Here is a link to their website, http://www.breeders-choice.com/dog_products/avoderm-natural-and-avocado-safety.htm

  • Hey Lisa… must have been at the same place, same time....ggg

  • I understand it has been around a long time but that doesn't really answer the question. Avocado's Fruit, Leaves, and Bark all contain Persin (a chemical that can cause vomiting and intestinal issues in dogs). So how does this food mitigate this issue?

  • @LiveWWSD:

If you went to the link that lvoss posted they talk about that…...

This is a quote from the link lvoss provided:

The avocado meal and oil used in the AvoDerm Natural pet products comes from the meat of the fruit and does not contain leaves, bark, skin or pit of the fruit. The oil is extracted from ripened fruit in which the meat pulp has been separated from the skin and the pit. Through a mechanical separation process the oil is extracted and filtered and placed into sealed containers. The pulp of the fruit is dried, ground, and screened before being placed into its final packaging and than shipped to our facility

  • Awesome thank you for the clarification. I was at work today and couldn't get the link to load. It doesn't really matter for myself as I feed the dogs a BARF diet, but it just made me wonder. As always this is one of the best things about these forums, I love being able to pick all of your brains. Thanx so much. :)

@tanza: While I understand "financial" concerns, better quality food equals usually feeding less so what you spend up front is a savings in the end…. Not only that, but better health in the long run, so potentially less $$$ spent on vet bills. Just like with us humans, you have to think outside of the box when it comes to how much you spend on food. In the long run spending extra $ on higher quality food may mean savings over time with our health.

@Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

@agilebasenji: If you and your vet are happy with their weight, I would not change the amount you're feeding them. However, my pups need more calories in the winter to maintain their weight. Treats - my pups love sweet potatoes and raw (or cooked) zucchinis. sometimes dogs like green beans or carrots. at my house, tri-ing is really bad about taking the carrots, chewing them up and spitting them out all over the place. Yea, thanks Jet. Otherwise, they also like cheese, waffles, eggs, etc, but given you pup's allergies, you may not want to try the later. LOL…. leave it to the "Tri-ing" to make a mess out of the carrots!!!!

@ComicDom1: So have they closed all investigations? Did the FDA pull their investigators out of China? I have not seen the anything that has been finalized about all of this so if you could provide a link with that information I would appreciate it. Thanks Jason I don't have a link handy, and don't have time to do a search this morning, but I do know that the pet food recalls ended late last Summer and there haven't been any more since then. In Feb of this year, the FDA did indict two Chinese nationals, one Chinese business, one US company, and the president of that company for their roles in importing the tainted gluten, which was imported between Nov. '06 and Feb. '07. I'm sure the info can be found at the FDA website. I'm almost positive that's where I got my information.

Yeah, Jack is like that with broccoli- when he sees me pulling it out of the fridge to cook for me, he gets all excited and trembly with anticipation. He immediately sits and watches until he just can't stand it anymore and then he's HANGING TEN COUNTER SURFING!!!!!!

I have now switched from Blue Buffalo food to Merricks wet and dry. The Blue Buffalo was hard to get, I had to buy it out of town. I get Merricks locally, and Sahara absoutely eats it better than all the rest. She is a picky eater and doesn't have a big appetite, but man oh man is she waiting when it is meal time now. She cleans her dish, a new thing for her. I am very happy, I use the dry also with about 1/4 cup of wet mixed in. I add alittle warm water to the dry (it makes it's own gravy) heat the wet alittle and add to the dry. Yes, I know Sahara is spoiled b/c I heat her wet food but what the heck, she is worth it, only takes a few seconds. Merricks is pricey $2 per can but I make it last for about 4-5 meals. Anyways, if you read the can and bag of the dry you will see what I mean, it is very good dog food and the family that has the company has been in business for 3 decades.
