Apartments, Jobs, and Bs - oh my!

Basenji Talk
  • Since I got my B and my Pharaoh Hound, I've been working from home and able to play with them and walk them throughout the day. It's all going to change when I move to Seattle. I'll be (hopefully!) working a 9-5 job, and the kids will have to stay at home inside an apartment.

Does anyone else have a similar situation? If so, what methods have you used to make sure that the dog(s) don't get too lonely or bored during the day? That they can relieve themselves somewhere?

I'm really not looking forward to being away from them, all day everyday! They're both so very bonded to me, and I know it will be a very tough transition for them to not be right by my side all day long. (sigh) It will be a necessary evil.

    Any advice?

  • I have my Tayda and Lenny in a crate while I go to my 9-5 job. I videotaped them while I was gone when I first got them and they literally sleep ALL day! Its hard being away and feeling guilty that they are bored, but after I videotaped them, I stopped feeling bad…

  • I crate Dallas during the day & just be sure to leave him a couple toys in the crate to play with. I feel bad too when I leave in the AM for work but every afternoon when I get home he is curled up in his crate sleeping. I'm sure he finds ways to entertain himself :p

  • I have found if you make your goings and coming homes as calm and matter of fact as possible, the dogs take it in stride.
It when there is a lot of drama with going and arriving that dogs get worried.
    Anyway, that is my advice.

  • Since you have a pharoah hound also maybe get the exercise pens instead of individual crates so they have a little more room together.

I totally agree with Sharron on this. Also, you may want to try to exercise the dogs before you leave. That will help relieve tension and hopefully they will sleep while you are gone.

  • I agree about making your entrance and exit as much of a non event as possible.

oh - should add that the white pine people have samoyeds and there is no bleed from the collars onto the white coats. and my bearded collie friends have them and swear there is less hair breakage.

Okay, that is interesting. An 'aloof' owner and 2 outgoing dogs - go figure.

Often dogs don't know WHERE to go, in a new place. So, take them out every 3 hrs and treat/praise with proper elimation. Also, keep the areas of the apt your not in, closed. Keep the dog with you, and if you see the nose down, take it out. This should pass as the dog gets more settled. We travel a lot with our dogs, and we keep them with us in motel rooms, with closets, bathrooms shut. When they act like they are sniffing, we take them out. Also, extra exercise with your b will help. Good luck

This entire thread is hysterical. (Sorry, Tucker…I guess it wasn't funny while cleaning up) I have tears in my eyes. Thanks for making me laugh! Glad to know he's doing well. I've been there quite a few times myself, but usually it's limited to the dining room rug. Can't wait to throw that sucker out...

That's funny, because isn't the breed from Africa?
