Puppy pads and other potty training ?

puppy pads…do they work? Where should you put them, or is it better to try to just put the puppy outside every hour or so. I heard that sometimes when you use puppy pads, once you remove them, they will still go in that spot from habit or learned behavior. I am also home all day, so keeping a eye on him is no problem. The B I have right now is 8 months, and we got her at 3 months and was already potty trained (great I know!), but the new one will only be 10 weeks old. I can't block off the carpet area since it's an open concepts house, and I would have to get a baby gate like 13 feet long lol. Also do those enzyme pee cleaners work? Hopefully he'll just want to tag along with Mia when she goes outside and learn from example.
Also when I first got Mia, I would bring her out in the middle of the night for at least 2-3 weeks, is that right, or can they go the whole night? -
I can only speak for myself, but my B's just shredded the potty pads – I tried them first with Jazz and then was silly enough to think it may be different with Keoki -- shredded them and peed on the floor anyway. LOL
Clean the pee up right away with a damp sponge or even paper towels to absorb what you can, then clean it with a solution of 1/4 white vinegar to 1 warm water.
Your house will smell like vinegar until it dries, but after that it shouldn't.I took mine out at about 11 PM every night and not again until about 6:30 or 7 AM.
Good luck. Potty training is the only part of puppy hood that I can't stand!

I plan on getting some potty pads for Dallas but only probably to put in his crate underneath (in the pull out tray) so if he does have an accident i can have easy clean up. I don't plan on putting them anywhere in the house because I plan on just watching him whenever he is out of his crate & being sure to take him out frequently.
I also plan to bring Dallas to my office every one in a while so I will be sure to bring some with me then to put in his crate, again for easy cleanup at my office! Haha.

We used them for our first two and found that they work great! …. At teaching the dog that it is OK to go in the house. Personally, I will never use another pad. We will just stick to crate training and have to come home to let them out during the day.

our new puppy gets here on friday.. and we decided not to use them.. like said before.. we feel it would teach the puppy its okay for her to potty in the house.. and our older B that he can too..

I would never use them either as it is twice the work and training. So much quicker to train them to go out right from the start.

You know I also plan on bringing one/two with me for the car ride back from Ocala, since it's a 2.5 hour drive! I know we plan on stopping half way during the drive but just in case I want to have a pad because I certainly don't want the pee in my car! :p

been there done that.. lol except i ran into the supermarket for 2 minutes to get ONE thing.. there was pee on EVERY SINGLE SEAT. needless to say.. no dogs in my car unattended.. EVER again.. lol:cool:

That sucks! Haha. I know we plan on bringing our cage with us also to pick him up (just in case) but I doubt I will able to resist holding him the whole way :p

Fair warning –- Keoki just tore up the pads on the seats of the car and peed on the seat anyway....:( He is such a turd:rolleyes:

Hopefully Dallas won't since he'll probably end up in my lap the entire way home…except when we stop half way for a quick potty break ;)

When mine are babies I do paper train them within the kitchen - then gradually reduce the amount of paper until just one section remaining. Then comes the interesting part - when they head for that paper - I know they need to go out. I also have a 'paper' by the door we use to go out to the dog yard - so head for paper - go outside - pretty quickly don't need paper at all as they go to the door.
With adult dogs who know the 'door' I find that the puppies just follow and the previous generation teaches the new generation.
(guess they only need me to bring the food)

and they don't tear the paper? Geez, mine LOVE LOVE LOVE to shred paper. No paper on the floor is safe. I am amazed that yours leave it alone and actually use it properly!
