Spaying recovery

    My B (almost 8 months) got spayed last week. Her recovery has been fine except for what the vet calls an accumulation of fluid near her incision. She told me to put a warm compress on her (I use a "magic bag") twice a day, and I am sure B owners know how hard it is to get a B to sit still for more than 10 minutes lol. So I have been doing so when she naps, and it hasn't really gone down. It's been 3 days since they told me to do that and they said call back on Friday if it doesn't change (I called them today to say it was still there). They said they could drain it but that it could cause more complications. Anyone seen this before or have any suggestions on how to make the fluid reabsorbe faster? It's not seeping out the incision.

    I have never had one get an accumulation of fluids and I have had a number of bitches spayed…... What does it look like? is it large? small? I think I might be concerned with a pocket of fluids that was trapped...

    Did the vet see the swelling or just give the recomendation over the phone?

    Rally just came home from her spay surgery and her post op care sheet says:
    "Check the incision daily. A firm swelling at the incision site is normal. However, you should call us if redness around the swelling occurs, if the swelling feels soft, or if you notice any oozing from the incision."

    I have never seen "liquid" under the skin…seems to me something is wrong..
    I would take her back and have the vet check her out.
    Could she have broken some of the internal stitches?

    I brought her to the vet on Monday and that's when she said to put a hot compress on the site. The incision looks normal and healing very well. No redness at all. The swelling is probably like the size of an almond. I noticed it because she's always had a very lean and flat tummy (don't we all wish we could be like that lol). I thought it was unhealthy too to have fluid accumulate under the skin, but the vet said it happens. I will keep an eye on it, and they said to call them on Friday with an update. Hopefully it will go away soon. In the mean time she really likes snuggling up with the heat pad.

    :) thanks everyone for the replies , ;) she's no longer wearing the cone and back to the vet on Wednesday to get her stitches out Now we can have some real fun at the dog parks :)

    Most Vets will not recommend spay during season and unless there is a medical reason for doing it now, will recommend waiting till she is at least 3 to 4 weeks past the end of her season. I would also agree you should put it off and wait. Keep in mind however the neutered males can achieve a tie with a bitch in season, however considered "safe sex"… but since you have two males, this could present a problem, so something to keep an eye on

    Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

    @yag113: Exactly how I feel. Fortunately I love my vets, it's a husband and wife and they have come to know how I am and always work with me. I have 2 goats and the husband does farm calls. I feel very lucky. I always take the staff chocolates and snacks just in case I feel the need to get obnoxious about something…they will placate me! Thanks again for the input. I adore my dog and it's very cool to talk to people who love basenjis! Sounds like a great Vet practice!!! Let us know how the spay goes, I am sure she will do great!

    Zaire was tired for the first day that I brought her home. After that she seemed pretty unaffected by her surgery. It was (I think) much more traumatic for me than for her, as I was soo worried for the next week that she needed to slow down. In the end all went well, with the exception that she healed MUCH QUICKER than my vet initially thought, and I ended up having to take her in 3 days early to take out the stitches as they were tightening on her scar and cutting into the skin. As soon as they took them out her swelling on the scar went down within a day and looked Amazing as far as healing. I I didn't notice much of a difference in energy level or eating and drinking after the first day home. As for Behavior she seemed the same to me. I do think she went into a false heat earlier this month/late august and for about 3 weeks was a DEMON to her brother and the min-pin. _Yelling and screaming at them all day). But that's my princess, she will not take guff from any male. :D

    She is still bleeding. I rescheduled for two weeks from Thursday. Her mom bled for almost a month and a half before letting the dad mount her. This sucks.
