Great Canned Food

Basenji Feeding
  • For those of you looking for a great canned food for your kids, I have to say mine are crazy about EVO canned, but not the 95% meat one, but the specialized ones, Duck, Rabbit, etc… and they love the Duck... while I have to special order a case (and that is not a problem) it is a great food and my elders with health problems and do not always want to eat..this has been real find...

  • I'll have to try those…I use the 95% meat ones. Apache is real picky and I'm always looking for ways to get him to keep eating! Thanks!

  • My old kids and one that is in renal failure loves both the duck and rabbit…

  • I tried these when we were in Cali for the nationals (they came in some of the bags that were being handed out for some wins)…
The ONLY dog of mine that would eat any of them was the live grabage disposal, aka Kenny (my fulll African that loves all fruits and veggies and anything else under the sun).
None of my dogs are picky and generaly eat whatever I give them.... and it never occured to me that they'd have turned up their food (normally get canned Natural Balance in their dinners) when I put some of that in there.
Rest assured, Kenny was well fed for a few days! LOL

Had they eaten it, I would have really considering buying it for them, as the ingredients seemed very good. I guess my pocket book got lucky this time around!!

  • I feed dry Evo-Innova mix but have to give one of my dogs medicine twice a day. The EVO rabbit and venison are great for getting even a very suspicious dog to take a bite. I will look for the duck as well.

  • I send a few cans to a friend that was having problems with her bitch not eating after whelping.. sent her a rabbit and a couple of duck.. and her bitch loved it…

I emailed the person listed in the original post to find out if she wrote the first warning. She did write it- here is her reply: But after eating the food…the 6 dogs here got sick, and two died within a week of each other. Different ages and breeds. After putting it out on the internet...3 more dogs have eaten the food and died. Many just got sick. So use your judgement. But the only thing in common seems to be Kirkland Lamb and rice with exp. 2013. We are waiting to hear results on testing...but that takes time. In the meantime...this food has been sold in Nov-Dec. 2011 and is on the shelves in our homes. So to save other lives...I would warn everyone you know that feeds it.

I once had a pup under treatment at the Bristol Veterinary hospital. When they finally sorted the problem I was told now you'll be able to give him real food meaning kibble!1 I always feed raw and whatever but never complete dog food. Having said that it seems that over here we get a new dog food manufactutrer every month and all claim that theirs is the best!!

@Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

Topper,12; Nicky 10, ; and Eddie 8 all eat a combination of 3/4 EVO by Innova, and 1/4 regular adult Innova. We free feed, dry kibble is down all the time, but I think I put about 3 cups out a day, some days they eat it all but some days I don't add kibble at all. Mine do get a bit of whatever we have for dinner, mostly veges, they love all veges as long as they are cooked, especially broccoli and sweet potatoes. IT acts as an appetizer, as soon as they finish their plates they run to the kibble bowls to finsih their dinner. We used cheaper grocery store foods for many years but I felt my dogs deseerved a better quality food so tried several premium brands and settled on Innova. Then when they came out with EVO, I slowly added that but when I went 100% EVO, their poops were a bit loose, so we re-added the regular Innova and it seems to suit them perfectly. Eddie's coat was very coarse when we rescued him, he is soft and silky now. Even though it costs about twice as much as the cheaper stuff, I know they are getting good nutrition and their coats glow and their teeth are clean, so it is worth every cent to me. We are what we eat, and if we eat 'animal by products' (hooves, bones, feathers and even sawdust in some) sprayed with flavors and dyed with food colorings, we may be saving money now, but inviting health probelms in the future. Just MHO, but strangers compliment my dogs on their gloss and vigor! Anne in Tampa, off the soapbox
