Ever worry about B running off during lure coursing?

    Lenny has done lure coursing before but always with his breeder. Now that we're far from her, I want to continue him with the lure coursing. I went to one event with her before I left Michigan and it looked like great fun! I was surprised that the course was not fenced in. Lenny did fine, chased the lure the whole time and then pounced on it at the end while we nabbed him and put his leash on. There's an event next weekend that I could go to, but I worry that he'll run off! Like, what if he sees an ACTUAL squirrel?

    Anyone else have problems/concerns w/ B's running off while Lure coursing?

    Very few people have had dogs run off…but it has happened....

    I don't worry about it too much, because either my dogs are completely nuts on the lure...or won't go more than 25 yards from me (Querk and Luna!!) I haven't tried Ariel. At first I thought I would be more worried about her running away..being a full Af..and well...more primative...but now that I know her better...I doubt she would even leave me :)

    I worry much more about the line snapping, and the dogs fighting over the "bunny" than I do about running away.

    I would really work on recalls, so that if something does happen you would be able to get them back quickly. There are some really fun coursers out in your area. http://www.apubasenjis.com/ check here for some info :)

    I agree with Andrea. I have one who would goof off and not let us catch him when he was young. After 30 minutes of chasing after him in a horse pasture and then only catching him because he stopped to roll in horse manure, we started to muzzle him when he ran. He couldn't care less about the muzzle when the lure is running and as soon as it stops he either finds me to take it off or he lies on the bag and stuffs it into his muzzle.

    Exactly… the muzzle is the answer for sure... if they are keen on the lure, they will not be bothered at all while running... but will not typically ever run off very far if at all at the end of the run.

    I worry about the same thing so I'm planning on using EXTRA special treats when we try it out :D

    Tayda & Lenny-are you guys planning on going to the on in NJ?? That's where were thinking of going.

    If you B has never run, then you need to do practice first… and if ASFA Trial they need to be certified and AKC then need a JC certificate before they can run. Some ASFA trials have "singles" that you can enter in and they run by themselved.

    Also even if your B has run before, but not with you as handler, I would still suggest that you go, see what a trial is all about etc... and just do practice until you are comfortable that you can catch your B at the end of the course

    @ibi_n_sane: yess it was a great day :D cant wait to see the pictures of Job ( Janneke's boyfriend ) that he made from our dogs too! we only took our galgo and 2 ibizans to the coursing, that gives us all our hands full enough haha the basenjis and our oldest ibizan hound can come the next time, allthough they enjoy the racing track too! ( the settlement of the racing track allows us to take all dogs at the same time and not having our hands full with these 6 haha ) I loved to see Barry (the galgo) run.. he ran beautiful…. :D And yes... I liked Cy and Smitty also... :D

    Bring a chair to sit in (as there will be a long waiting period in between runs), a crate for your B to hang out when you aren't running or walking around, snacks, plenty of water for you and your B and you should be all set! I will be in a black Toyota FJ Cruiser so if you see my truck you can park by me.

    @ComicDom1: Kelli, Miranda and I are interested in Lure Coursing also. We are located in IL so we will be looking here and in the surrounding states for events. ComicDom1 Jason If you are not far from the WI border, the BCOSW club is having a coursing fundraising event at Lurecoursing Fanatics on May 9th in Somers, WI. It's fenced in and it's just for fun and open to any breed. $5 for one run, $8 for two. I'm bringing Zoni so she can do a puppy run or two. The info for the ASFA field trial in Belvidere, IL is also on the BCOSW website. http://www.bcosw.org/ (go to the events page)

    @Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

    @lvoss: In order to get a JC your dog does not need to run with another dog. A JC is earned by your dog running the course by itself. It must pass 2 JC tests to earn the title. To certify a dog for ASFA the dog must run with another dog and show that it will not interfere. D'oh! I got the two mixed up :) But that's what I meant, lol…. Most of the lure trials we attended were ASFA trials....I think we did do practice runs at ONE AKC trial, but Jibini was less than 1 year old so I am pretty sure thats why we never did a JC "qualifying" run. I'm tempted to get back into it now that I have my own "pair".....but it always seems money is an issue that makes a 300-400 mile weekend jaunt a bit out of reach!! I also found it disheartening that there were so few Basenjis entered in Florida lure courses, and among those I met, nobody had dogs who could run with a strange dog. However, I enjoyed the time I spent at Lure trials and letting Jibini run....it was fun, even if we didn't get any "alphabet soup" for Jibini's name!!! Defintely an experience well worth it :)

    @Sunny: At what age is the best time to start lure coursing ?? And is there a course in oklahoma ?? Ide love to get Sandie into something like that, if she is interested… Sunny, You can start very short practices with puppies but you can't actually enter a trial until a dog is at least a year old. Coursing is available in Oklahoma. Your best bet is to contact Richard Stilwell. Richard and his wife Linda have been involved with lure coursing Basenjis for a long time and they can get you started in your area. Send me a private message for Richard email My best wishes. :)
