Stupid question….

    Keoki is 9 mos old and has never exhibited any "mounting" behaviors, not toward the other dogs, people, pillows, nothing.

    Bryan is going to be taking him soon to have a semen collection done for possible future breeding. Once Keoki learns what his "special purpose" in life
    is :rolleyes: , do you think I should expect to see those behaviors begin?

    I've only ever owned one other male dog, and he was neutered very young by the shelter.

    I do have an odd question though - what would be the reason for possibly collecting a dog that young? Can't tell a lot at 9 months on how he holds up, matures etc. I suppose if you were shipping him overseas that would make sense in the event he turns out to be fabulous but help me out here - I just don't get it.

    Not that I want to talk for Jazzy's Mom, but I think she wants to have him neutered…. many people that get B's are not interested in keeping them in-tact... by collecting them, you have the best of both worlds... having him collected so if the breeder wants to use it it is there, the owner can neuter.... I think it is a great option...

    I guess from time to time some of us oldies (before tech and test) (and perhaps I'm the only one) just look at things a little differently.

    IMO we are loosing a lot in this breed for a variety of reasons - it's nice that this health test appears to be helpful - now if we could do something about fronts - wouldn't that be nice! :)

    I think that (if you are talking about the DNA Fanconi test) is more that "appears" to be helpful… at least IMO.... of course it will be great if we get the direct test sooner than later.. along with PRA test... and even better if OFA data base was totally open for HD results, not optional.

    And yes, it would be nice to help the fronts... and other body parts!.. in some cases....

    That's it! We never planned to breed Keoki, in fact Bryan didn't originally plan to breed him. But things and situations change…. so he asked before he's neutered for the opportunity to collect for the future.
    At the time he asked, we were going to let Bryan continue to show Keoki, so he would have collected later. However -- things and situations change..... and we've decided to neuter him sooner, so Bryan will collect sooner. ;)

    I was wondering the same thing too. Chance will be a year old at the end of the month and has never humped or shown any interest in the opposet sex. Is this normal? (I know I should be thanking my lucky stars that he doesn't do this) :p

    I think that for many (maybe most) basenjis they are not very sexual beings until breeding season. We tried to collect Querk once out of season, and he was like, using an in heat St. Bernard 'uh, no…she stinks, and keeps whapping me in the face with her tail!' we tried the next season with an in season B bitch, and he gave a huge, healthy sample ;)

    So, he was never a humpy, testosertone dog until maybe the second breeding season. And then only when a neighbor dog was in heat or something. After we had females that started coming into heat, he did become difficult to live with during the season. He tied once with Blondie long after she was out of heat, because she just stood there @@ ! So he has bred naturally..and he has been collected several times. And once he was neutered just about every bit of humping went away. In fact, this season when Blondie was in full bloom..she started humping him!!! We were talking about paybacks being a you know what ;)

    So my answer to your question is, no, I don't think collecting him will make a bit of difference in his behavior :)

    Aside from the answer that Pat gave, you might also need that dog genetically in your breeding program for reasons other than show quality. Maybe he has a particulary great combination of health attributes. Or maybe he is the only male in the litter, and you want to preserve that tail male line?

    IMO, it isn't all about how the dog turns out…but what the genetic package is?

    thanks clokatys, i must to say that here we got 35-40 C i think 95 F -104 F and even we get at 44 at top 111F So when its to hot my girls sleep on the floor getting fresh .. inside the house of course or inside a cartoon box that they like and even with these hot weather they take some sun baths. But they dont like so much the comfort beds at the day because is too hot. So i cant explain to me leaving them inside a crate, i think is too hot. I even let a fan directly to my bed so they can go there and sleep with the air. I let almost daily the tv or the computer with the radio on, so they got the same noises that get when im there. And i left some clothes or pijama over my bed in case that the smell give some comfort. I adopted Laika because dont want that Maca was alone all day sure, i dont have such advise here or i were getting a male. They sleep all day and are very happy at nights getting outside the house to walk and getting some fresh. The house is so hot on the second floor, but the first floor is more fresh and they spent the day on that place and can go outside to make pee well… Maca does, Laika dont.. Or can go to check the lizards or the neigbours dog, we have 5 months on these new house and some days i left separate.. pff i must do that today.. Maca was anxious and i fail to read that.. just know writing i get the idea that i must left one inside and one outside on the garden, that have a little roof to give shelter from the sun and the rain. Well, so i thinks is too hot and boring having them crate.. so i separate them when Maca is anxious and these is the days that i must do that. Will carry on checking their plays and stoping when is too much. I notice too, lately that sometimes one invite the other to play rolling and showing the belly so the other grab the neck of the one showing belly or try because the other escapes and then they switch. Some times Laika do that, i mean push Maca with her side and then Laika seek the belly position to escape asap. The day they fight was when i was leaving the house to work and was on january i think was the strees of the new house, i must left separte and fail to recognize that. I need to learn to read them. I hope wont find any injury bad. On weekends i spent all day at home and they sleep and play or go to take sun baths or follow me while i do my house chores and get happy at the door to take walks that days. Will carry on checking his plays.. will make a video so you can check the kind of plays, sure all with hunting practice..

    @barklesshound: My neutured, male Basenji does this sometimes when he wakes from a nap and the pattern is always the same. There are two very hard acorn size lumps on either side of his penis, closer to the base but not as far back as the scrotum area. Yes, that would be the description of both of my neutered males. Usually after sleeping or relaxing, and it disappears quickly. Maybe erotic dreams at work? Pretty harmless, in any case. :)

    @saralars: Yes this is true, I don't know anything for sure. I am just going on the owner's word that this was a pup from one of the puppy mill rescues and that they got her from a foster home. I am pretty sure I will get a 'mind your own business' from them if I ask which rescue they got her from. I will ask tonight though. Do most rescues come with a chip? I could get her to my vet for a scan…but not sure if I will just get owner info. or rescue info. from that. First, I will see if I can get an answer from them about rescue (which one) and then go from there. FAILING to me equals bringing her here for a month and not being able to help her with house breaking and in the process get attached to her and have it all be for nothing if I failed to do it. Thank you for your reply and common sense insight. I am a rescuer, a fixer! Looking at the big picture I don't want to enable them to keep on doing this. I can appreciate your position and the fact that you do not want to enable these people to keep doing something like this again. I guess I just have a different view of what rescue or what a rescuer is. In my view rescue or being a rescuer is about being a facilitator who helps retrieve animals out of situations that are unhealthy, unsafe, or unfit. Then that facilitator makes sure the animals health needs are met and attempts to find safe haven and stable situation for that animal where they will be loved, cared and provided for. I can appreciate you wanting to train this animal by helping to housebreak it but as I said in my other post, I think there are bigger problems here than just Pee. Jason

    @JoeyQ: Yikes, have we done something really wrong??? Joey has not been aggresive at all. When we play with him he will "bite" our arms, but not hard. If we say "ow" or "no biting" he stops immediately. Should we not encourage this behavior? or is it ok to do when we are playing which has been the only time that Joey uses his mouth? We do the same thing. Alani will put her mouth around our arms but never bite down enough to even leave an indentation. However, sometimes she will grab a toy to play fetch and if I don't respond or tell her I don't want to play she will lay the toy across my arm and act like she's chewing on her toy but feel for where my skin is and start pinching it. I know she's doing it on purpose and she thinks she's so sneaky…but I know.
