• @Basenji_Boy:

I was suprised how many dogs didn't finish and just ran off and did something else.:D 😃

I have only been able to visit one coursing event, and that surprised me,too.

Several times the dogs would catch sight of a few birds flitting around and take off after them. A couple of times the dog just stopped, turned around, and trotted back to their people. One dog had to stop to poo in the middle of the course, then just picked up running where he'd left off; and then there were those who took the short cut across the field to cut the lure off at the pass!

As a spectator, it made it far more fun! 😃

  • @Basenji_Boy:

That seems to be what everyone that watched him run keeps telling us. We're not that well versed in Lure Coursing.

He's run four times so far and has run pretty much the same each time. He's always finished the course and has been on the lure pretty good.

Now you need to practice him with other dogs and see how he does….

I would assume a dog he isn't familar with? The Judge on Sunday told my wife she wouldn't run him with another dog till he runs at least 15 more times???????? I thought that was a little odd. I really don't know what she meant….15 practice runs????

I would think if we would want to compete with Willy we need to determine whether he can or will run with other dogs. Other Basenji's wouldn't be the problem, it's the other dogs bigger than him that seem to get him excited.

A lady ran three Basenji's together, they all ran out there and pooped.:D

Willy and our Penny, and those other three where the only Basenji's there. Mostly Ridgebacks, a couple of whippetts and a few Saluki's.

Well it is good advise, 15 times… better then these people that get their JC's and immediately enter the dog in the trial only to wind up DQ'ed....

However, what you need to do really is see how he reacts with other Basenjis running. And yes, good idea to not run with your own.... and start with finding a "good" running bitch to try him with..... people that course all the time will be able to tell you if he is "focused" on the lure or the other dog... and once he is focused on the lure, then you can enter him....

I don't know how much we'll get into this, it involves more travel than dog shows. There's really nothing locally, everything seems to be in New Jersey.

  • Pat-when you run them with other dogs do you try it out with a muzzle first?? I would be worried that a fight might break out 😞

I muzzle them from the beginning… getting them used to running with a muzzle when they are running alone is the best way, they begin to associate the putting the muzzle on with running. Muzzle = Tally Ho!!!!

  • Kudos to Willy! Where do you take him for coursing? I've been trying to find a coursing location, but there don't seem to be any near Los Angeles. ~ Lori ~

There are some in So. Cal… you need to look on www.asfa.org for coming events and http://www.akc.org/events/search/ for akc. On the AKC page put in Lure Coursing tests and trials for competition type and the click on California and search

  • How fun! WTG Willy! I wish I had time to get Duke into this or agility of sorts. I don't have any time, but I know he'd make me proud like your Willy.
