Question…

Basenji Talk

  • Hi all,
I have a question about my dog throwing up. In the time we have had her she occasionally has thrown up here or there, always once with no problem after.
Anyway, today she threw up around 6:00 or so, and I am guessing it could be because she ate some grass clippings that were left on our lawn from the last time we mowed it. IT was partially digested food. Then I didn't feed her, but did give her a treat awhile ago. Now, she just threw up again, it was just the treat, plus the corner of a yo-go wrapper that we knew she nabbed earlier (THat was the only part she got, we got the rest away). She has never thrown up twice before, so I am worried. My husband said relax, she is a dog, that is normal but just wanted to get an opinion anyway. Is it normal for dogs to throw up more than once? Otherwise she is behaving normally, her energy level is normal, and she does still have an appetite, she tried to steal my food away as I was eating it! I know she is hungry but I don't wanna feed her right now cause I don't want to wake up to her throwing up in the night.

I also don't know what to do about feeding her, its either feed her now and risk her throwing up in the middle of the night, or feed her in the morning and risk her throwing up in the crate while we are at work.
    Any insight would be great.

  • Poor thing…What kind of treat did she get? :( Hopefully it's just the grass causing the vomiting...
If she is obviously hungry, I would feed her a little less than normal and if she gets dry food, mash it up with warm water so it is easier on her tummy. Just keep a eye on her at this stage I would say, but if she isn't pooping and keeps vomiting she will need to go to the vet.

  • You could give her some rice and a little chicken broth in very small amounts and see if she keeps it down. If not then she need to go to the vet.

When I worked in a vet clinic, if a dog had diarrhea or vomiting we would not feed for 12 hours to let the stomach settle and then offer very small amount of food at a time and watch. If after doing that several time throughout the day with no vomiting, go ahead and give her her normal ration.

  • Here's the thing-I know a lot of the people here will agree with me. Most B's will throw up-period. Mine will throw up if they have an empty stomach. Mine also get fed twice a day. The youngest will go outside first thing in the am and throw up. If you feed her too soon after she throws up she will throw up again. Sometimes the food didn't sit well in their stomachs and they will throw up. I wouldn't worry too much unless she continues to throw up and cannot keep water down at all or if she is throwing up for extended periods. Let us know how it goes today.

  • Tayda throws up periodically also. Just recently I've found that she tends to get car sick if we drive not long after she has eaten. She also does the throwing up of bile if she hasn't eaten in a while. I notice it mostly in the mornings since it will have been a long time since her meal the night before. I've actually gotten good at holding over the toilet so she throws up right in there. ha ha.

  • Nala throws up occasionally too. Last time it was in our bed, under our covers. LOL! DH got that wet one….ewwwww YUCK!

  • THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess!

  • great news. :)

    This is great advice.

Here is my rule of thumb that a vet told me once.

If the dog or cat throws up once, dont worry. If he/she throws up 3x in one day then go to the vet.

Dogs eat grass to make themselves throw up when their tummy is sour. My basenjis have all done this.

I have seen them throw up florescent green, food like you said, and stuff they shouldnt have eaten, and everything under the sun. If it is normal throw up they will typically try to eat it.

My boyfriend and I got our Basenji in February, and he's 9 months now. We did our research, used positive reinforcement training, crated him at night until he was potty trained and then let him sleep in the bed with us, and we had extensive play sessions with him in the mornings and walked him until he (or we!) got tired in the afternoon/evening. He's crated for a few hours during the day when both of us are at work; we live in a small apartment with no room for an x-pen, and are considering doing some test runs with leaving him free in the apartment, because he hasn't been destructive the few times that he has escaped his crate. Result: he sticks to us like glue. Though we rarely get to let him off-leash anywhere, he likes to keep us in sight and keeps a watchful eye on strangers who come near us both in and out of the house. We still have playtime with him in the morning (anywhere between 30 mins and 1 and a half hours of fetch, tug-o-war, chasing, and the Basenji500), and we try our hardest to give him a good long walk before we go to bed. He's okay with the crate, though he doesn't hang out in it of his own free will, but he tolerates it for when we're gone. His most destructive times are in the morning when he wakes up before us and decides to see if we were silly enough to leave any clothing or paper in his reach to shred up (we've lost money, a deck of cards, shoes, underwear, shirts, bookbags, etc.), and in the afternoon when one or both of us happens to be home but not paying attention to him, so he starts tugging on drapes, bedding, even the carpet - but more to get our attention than actually ruin anything. It's work, but Paco makes it worth it in the end with cuddles, doggy-smiles, and never-ending enthusiasm!

@Maya: When i was first in touch with Maya's breeder i asked lots of questions about health testing. I knew the temperment of Maya's mum (which is fantastic!!) as i had met her several times, so i asked all about Dad. Having witnessed some horrific temperments around the ring over here, health and temperment were a priority for me… I also would have been concerned if the breeder hadn't asked LOTS of questions of me. She wanted to know if i'd researched the breed, if i knew they weren't necessarily easy to live with (and explained!) and just lots of questions about me to make sure she knew if i would be a responsible basenji owner. I think with such a unique breed you need a responsible breeder who is looking for a permenant home who has done their research :) This was totally my experience as well. I was very aware that it wasn't just us interviewing a breeder, but the breeder getting to know us. I was really grateful to see that our amazing breeder took the time to make sure that we knew what we were getting into. It would make me exceptionally leery if a breeder handed over a Basenji, no questions asked.

The only reasons I would not crate little bs with big bs is (1) I don't want any fighting so you would have to play that one by ear (2) If the little one potties in the crate accidentally the big b has to suffer too. But I only have 1 so thats all I could think of
