    This is my first post here or in any forum, never had a reason until I got my puppy. I rescued him from the SPCA when we was approx. 4 months? They said he was a hound shepard mix. But someone at the dog park asked if he was a Basenji, so I started to do some research, and he has almost all the characteristics and features. I am gonna work on a pic. He is a great little dog, just gotta work on the pee trails around the house.

    Hello and welcome to the forum. I too have a rescued basenji mix. The shelter had her listed as a whippet mix. We had her a short time before the first person mentioned "basenji" as a possiblity. They were RIGHT. Like you, we researched the breed and we have no doubt she is part b. I look forward to seeing pics of your little fella.

    Getting a dog from a responsible breeder is definitely worth the wait and the work to find. At my vet's office we are "the good basenjis". My vet actually sees several basenjis in their practice and the only ones they look forward to seeing are mine. The reason, mine have never tried to bite them, nor are mine shy about being handled, they are healthy. My vet was really upset to have a new client bring in her 8 week old basenji fresh off the airplane, it was terrified of people and had slipping patellas. My mom's vet is considered "the" basenji vet in her area. The majority of his clients have dogs bought from the internet or a local BYB. He became "the" vet because so many of his basenji clients are being treated for a variety of hereditary diseases. He was absolutely shocked when she came in with hers for their first exam. First off, that she was able to provide him with OFA information for both of her dogs plus information on the health of their parents. Secondly, because they were both in really good condition, good muscle tone, no signs of the disorders he so commonly sees. I have much the same experience with dog trainers. There are certain issues that they get used to dealing with because the pups that come to them did not receive as much early socialization. They are pleasantly suprised to see well socialized puppies with good communication skills. So what I am trying to say is that good breeding shows.

    Of course you and your beautiful baby are welcome no snobbs here. And I do agree there's a B in there. Your baby is really sweet looking, enjoy. I also have a rescue and believe me they give back a thousand times more then what you give them.

    I wouldn't recommend getting a basenji until you've organized your new schedule with baby. basenjis are wonderful dogs, but require a lot of attention and stimulation. If you can't provide that, he could become a frustrated dog and cause mischeif. I've also read that they aren't the best with children. I haven't had the best experience with my basenji and daughter. It has a lot to do with the fact that we can't give him sufficient attention and exercise like he needs. he also hasn't adjusted to my daughter's presence either. that may not be a problem for you because you're having baby first then dog. they say its always a plus because it allows the child to establish a dominence over the dog, since child was there first. i don't want to be a sour apple, but i just want to let families with children know that it can be difficult and dangerous if proper care isn't given. its also unfair to the precious breed if they cant have the active life they need and crave.
