Small lump on head

  • [Hello, just looking to see if any members have ever had small lumps growing on their basenji? It first appeared back in May and he was taken to the vet who said who said they thought it was either a sebaceous cyst or wart. They said not to worry about it unless it got any bigger and changed colour, which it hasn’t. It doesn’t seem to cause him any bother and it hasn’t affected his mood at all, he’s still as crazy as ever. I’m really just curious if anyone had saw something like this, and if there is anything that can be done to clear it up, other than operating? Thanks!

  • Can you send a photo?

  • Lots of sebaceous cysts as they get older. Certainly mine tended to get them. How old is your dog?

  • Sorry I was trying to upload earlier and I couldn’t. He’s only 3.

  • Might it be a Histiocytoma? They are supposed to be common in young dogs. It may resolve on its own or you could have it taken off, assuming that's what it is.....

  • My old folks often get lumps. I don't worry - but the vet always looks at them anyway at their 6 monthly health check up.
If you are worried, talk to your vet but frankly, if it isn't getting any bigger, I wouldn't worry.
Is it 'loose' in the skin, or does it appear attached ? If loose - probably OK. If attached, see the vet.

  • My Kembe had a small pea-sized lump on her lower hind leg removed when she was about 3 years old and it was pre-cancerous. She is now 13 years 9 months and has a lot of lumps and bumps - fatty bodies and a few warts - my Vet says it’s due to her age. Hopefully your dog’s lump is nothing to worry about but you should be it checked out by a Vet.

Best to get all lumps checked out by the vet, they are more qualified than us. Having said that, it’s probably just a lump like this which my dog has had for a couple of years. I asked the vet if they can get rid of it but they said better to leave alone. Fatty lumps are common as they age.

@dres_actually - Also that looks to be about the spot that a micro chip is placed? My Franie has a lump there but it doesn't bother her.... might be something for your vet to explore.

I love the look of Baron, now that is a cute basenji :-D I do notice that I love the masculin looking yet sweet B's. The way the muzzle looks is important to me I notice some basenji's have long slender muzzle and to me they look a little rat like, I guess I'm just one for the blockish heads with the shorter muzzle. I also like the super curly tails! All the other traits I really dont care if its a B its cute.

@BDawg1005: I thought Lexi has an almond shaped lump– I felt stupid when my hubby pointed out that it was her microchip!! Duh. Miles, however, actually has three lumps-- one is under his arm pit. We were told by Banfield that we should do surgery and then have them biopsied, but we are going to get a second opinion because they feel like fatty cysts to me and I would think the protocol would not be operate first... instead aspirate, send specimens to a lab, and then determine if they're benign... Regarding the armpit lumps, and fatty cysts: Querk had a few of these, and yes, our vet felt them, said the felt like "not tumors" but then she aspirated them. She said all are benign, but we could remove them next time he was under, which is what we did. I definitely wouldn't jump to surgery.
