Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Has anyone ever had to deal with hyperthyroidism in their Basenji rather than the hypothyroidism ?

  • I have not, but I have heard of some with hyper vs hypo.... off hand I don't remember much about it.... You might want to join some of the Basenji groups on Facebook if you have not already

  • I had a foster who tested via the Thyroid5 panel at hemopet to have hyperthyroidism which may indicate a cancer in some. He was tested right before arriving at his foster home and was quite active when he first arrived, running laps around the yard. We waited on further testing, giving him a couple of months to chill by the pool. He was pretty stressed out and confined in his previous home, so chill time really was needed. Two months later, another complete panel returned perfect mid-range normal results. No medication was ever used.

  • As a human, I have been "diagnosed" with both. Stress is a key factor. Relieve the stress, or exercise enough to deal with the stress and, very often, the Thyroid will quit misbehaving.

  • Thank you so much for your suggestions, the first test was at a 5.7 and I am awaiting the results of a second test. The initial blood test also revealed Diabetes Insipidus but I feel there is more to it than that and I see many of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism which i've read is usually results from medication for hypo and I had not given any such meds so it's a mystery how it was contracted. And we did lose her half brother in January which would explain added stress.

@jengosmonkey That is a very interesting link. My girl suffered none of the possible side effects. No lethargy, listlessness, weight gain and her shape remained immaculate till the day she died. But she no longer suffered from IBS.

Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

From Wikipedia: Longevity Basenjis in the 2004 UK Kennel Club survey had a median lifespan of 13.6 years (sample size of 46 deceased dogs),[6] which is 1–2 years longer than the median lifespan of other breeds of similar size.[7] The oldest dog in the survey was 17.5 years. Most common causes of death were old age (30%), urologic (incontinence, Fanconi syndrome, chronic kidney failure 13%), behavior ("unspecified" and aggression 9%), and cancer. (9%).[6] Among 78 live dogs in the 2004 UKC survey, the most common health issues noted by owners were dermatologic and urologic[6] (urologic issues in Basenjis can be signs of Fanconi syndrome).<< That was for a specific study, but if your grandmother has vet records, it would be fantastic for her to send them into her basenji club! I have heard of a few 17 and 18 yr olds, so am sure older are out there like your grandmother's.

My first girl got carsick. I used Dramamine (Gravol) for her. Luckily she outgrew the problem, because every time I had to pill her the neighbours thought I was killing her. She screamed her head off! (and of course spit out the pill). She did best riding loose in the back seat. That was in the '60s, and we didn't worry about such things…...
