Advice on keeping dog in yard

    We recently rescued a 2 1/2 year old boy. We are concerned about his ability to jump over a 3 to 4 ft fence. Any help about keeping him safe in the yard would be greatly appreciated.

    What kind of fence do you have? Many Basenjis are great jumpers, some will use chain link as a ladder, and a few like to dig. Some won't bother trying to get out but I wouldn't count on it. Best solution is a 6 - 8 foot vertical board fence. If you have chain link you can attach something to the inside of the top, e.g. pvc pipe, which may deter the dog. If you don't have any option to change your fence, invisible fence backed up by the physical fence can work.

    It's best not to leave the dog in the yard unsupervised in any case.....

    Depends on the dogs. We have 2 athletic B's but they wouldn't dream of jumping our 3 ft. fence. They just don't. And they don't want to be in the garden if we're not with them. Silly beasts.

    We simply ignored ours when they were begging for food - so now one lies at our feet, and the other lies somewhere in the area. After we are done, they get a little bit in their bowls - this has stopped them constantly trying to climb into our plates. Dog naturally try to get into trash cans - we got the kind you have to step on a lever to open the top. Then we turned the top toward the wall, and they wasted some time trying to open the part with the hinge, and now have given up on it. all the other advice above is great.

    @Patty: Shelley - I agree that Howards' was the better reaction but as I said it's understandable that you were worried because of your previous experiences. I hope now by everyones' comments and advice that you now realise that this is no major problem? Malaika is a different baby and she's yours to shape into a lovely girl - the good thing is that you've seen the worst and have the knowledge to avoid it!! Talking about growling - here's a laugh, Adonis, our Fula Tri, was excelled in obedience competition but from the age he started to the age he died he accompanied all his obedience actions with a low growl saying "I'm only doing this because you want me to." He had the sweetest temperament with young and old, known and unknown and the growl never meant "I'm going to bite you." :D:D Adonis sounded a real character and what a name, no wonder he had big ideas ;)

    Oh! the balcony has wall, she cant go out there in any way, just jumping, but she cant jump so tall. At least for now. I ll put some special toys.. thanks.

    3 Foot high fence really can be jumped by a Basenji. When Chance was 2 mts old he was climbing a 3 footer! We have a "modified" 4 foot metal gate at the top of the stair case which we know can not be jumped over. If it were on a flat surface and not at the top of the stairwell I bet it could be jumped over too!

    If I tried to pick up Sam and carry him away from a fight he would have a go at me. When he is worked up and I've tried to get him away he has bitten me. In every other respect he is a wonderful dog whom I love v much. I find it interesting that I haven't come across any other basenjis in this forum as aggressive as mine. Sam doesn't just growl or snap at other male dogs he actively pushes them and tries to goad them into fighting. I'm beginning to think that Sam is a particularly 'rambunctious' pup?
