Embarrassment Basenji style

  • Zahra had an all day vet appointment today at Banfield, I dropped her off early this morning and got a phone call at about 12:45 pm that she was ready to be picked up, when was I going to pick her up. I knew what that meant, it means that she was screaming up a storm there. She screams like crazy when seperated from Chase.

That wasn't the embarrassing part, the part that was embarrassing was that the nicest vet tech brought Zahra out in her arms cuddling her and talking about how sweet she was and then …

She bends over, holds Zahra out a bit and has a strange look on her face.

Zahra pee'd on her. All down the front of her and it went into her shoes.

I wanted to turn invisible. :o

That's when you say, "She really really likes you, you're the best Vet Tech…..........Ever!:D :D

  • Ohhh, how funny! That poor girl. I'm guessing Zahra was quite proud of herself. ;)

  • Aw! I'm sure it wasn't the first (or the last) time she'd gotten peed on! I'm sure that cudddling and snuggling from Zahra was well worth it! It's not often non-Basenji owners get to snuggle with one!

  • Hey, I'd rather a dog pee on me, than bite me :)

Me too, been there done that…....not good.

  • that is too funny! I guess she did like the tech.

  • LOL…I am sure the vet tech has had this happen before and probably worse...I can just picture it...

  • that is awesome!!

Basenji screaming is typical at the vet…Caesar is a champ! "Why confine me when I can run amongst you and enhance your day!"

  • The best part of this is that I had to take Chase to the vet yesterday because he injured his foot this past weekend. I was a little embarrassed to walk in there! LOL!

  • As a former vet assistant, I can safely say that I was peed upon in my first 2 days on the job. A beautiful little soft coated wheaten terrier "initiated" me as I lifted her onto the exam table- lol! I've also had a big (and very nervous) mixed breed empty his anal glands on my pant leg - drool, slobber, and other unpleasant bodily functions were all part of my every day "attire"! :) It's all in a day's work, I assure you! :D

  • This is what dogs do, I wouldn't be embarassed in the least, I am sure they are use to this. It would be worse if you took your kid to the doctor and they peed on them. haha!!!!

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

I ended up getting some Bitter Apple spray and that has so far deterred them from trying to eat it again. Now if I could only get a jug of it for when I try to load the dishwasher…...

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.
