Excessive thirst and urination question-

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • So it seems our sweet Bria girl is at the vet every other month; however, this time is a little more serious. For the past few days she has been drinking excessive amounts of water which results in excessive urination (all day and ALL night long). Her eating habits and energy level have remained the same. A few days ago, I used a test strip to test her urine for glucose which displayed a negative result. After another long night of letting her out and watching her beg for more water (almost 4 cups a day, more if she has the chance), I decided to take her to the vet. Her urinalysis result was normal, aside from low specific gravity (1.007), likely due to being diluted from all the water. Her blood test results showed low platelets and the vet doesn't seem to have any idea of what this could be. She is only 2 and a half years old, so I realize this could be very early fanconi, but can anyone else relate or provide recommendations of what our next steps should be? (Or at least give me ideas of how to get her to sleep through the night instead of begging for more water? At this time she has only had one accident in the middle of the night… probably because I was so tired I didn't hear her pawing at the door.)

--As a side note, the only change we've noticed in behavior is more hunting. I believe we have moles and she is often outside "on the prowl", which we have never seen her do before. I also witnessed her consuming rabbit feces a few times, but do not think that could be the cause of excessive thirst. The vet doesn't believe this could change her drinking habits, but I wondering if maybe it could have something to do with hormones?

The only sounds I can consistently coax out of Jake are the ones where he sounds possessed. Step 1: Flip him on his back Step 2: Tickle/Rub his spine area Step 3: Wait for the demons He'll make other noises when he feels like it but I haven't figured out the "triggers" yet.

Behavioral difference depend on the dog, the age the dog is neutered and other factors. Lots of studies on the topic but mostly you avoid the heightened mating response to other dogs in heat and chance breeding. Behaviorally, effects are generally not that much otherwise.

Who would have thought that worms were so interesting. My farm vet insists that dogs be wormed monthly but mine are on a weekly homeopathic wormer. I'm so pleased that Nahla has got rid of hers. And i accept what others have said about the possibility of a pup womitting up a worming tablet.

I think that in the future that it would be important to get a blood sample when or just after she is having the episode…. if it was a plant, critter bite... by now the toxic substance would most likely be gone.

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

Thank you..again! Yeah, it doesn't bother him a bit. It is kinda hard to see, just a dip at the top of his hip. I'll wait it out.:)
