Special tricks for potty???

Basenji Training
  • i just got my puppy yesterday, so i decided to buy a "pee stake" (a small spike you hammer in the ground to make you puppy use the bathroom) this didn't work, he saw this as a new toy to chew on  … has anyone had any expirience on these? did it work?

  • I have never used one (and not really heard of it either) and think that all things like that are just a gimmick to get people to spend money.

  • I just give my puppies a tiny cookie and LOTS of "good potty!!" praise for going in the right place.

A quick, "NO", and move them to the right spot if I catch 'em going elsewhere.
A quick and quiet clean-up if I find it after the fact.

No gimmicks, no props, no money spent.
Hmmm, a lot like potty training my kids. . . except they didn't get a cookie, LOL.

  • I did the same as jazzysmom. Except I gave my son a treat too!:p

I have never heard of a pee stake.

I wanted to add that you can only discipline them if you catch them in the act. So never leave him out of your sight.

  • I've seen the "Pee Stick" and even considered purchasing one but decided in the end not to.
Honestly, Our B pees in the same spot all the time. He has a routine. He has to poop in this one spot and then run to this other spot to pee.

  • thanks so much for the help!!

  • We are training our new puppy and it reminded me of somehting I did somewhat by accident with our other 2 dogs. When we wer etrying to get them to go, we always give them a treat. At some point of frustration, I tried to get their attention and let them know we had a treat by shaking th etreat jar. Eventually, they associated the shaking sound with going potty, so with the new puppy, I started shaking the jar every time she was actually going. After just 10 days, I can shake the jar and it gets her attention and makes her pee usually, even when she is distracted and walking all around.

Stop with the free feeding... this is a dog that needs to be on a schedule. And a cup and a half might be too much for a 20lb dog. Try reducing it to a cup. I have also found that feeding 2x's a dog is better than once a day. I have never let my dogs free feed. Once he is on a schedule you can mostly determine when he should have to go... and then you take him out and stay out till he goes. A trick you can use (many don't like this but I will put it out there) is what people that show use. Insert a match in his bum half way.... This will stimulate him to go, when he does praise/treat him. And until he gets the idea, you will need to keep him crated or on leash. You can search the forum for other conversations about using a match to stimulate. Search for match trick

Well, I hadn't really thought much about litterbox training, but thankfully we won;t be needing to look for alternative options to outside pottying. Things have all seemed to work out great over here. I think it just took me a little while to get accustomed to everything, but everything is running smoothly now. Thanks everyone.

@NerdyDogOwner: On the topic of pee, I have a question/issue. I have noticed Gizmo seems to quite often have a drop hanging on his penis a lot of the time. Also it's sometimes white, almost as if it's sperm. Now the first thing I thought of was your typical puberty signs, wetdreams etc. since his blanket also has quite a few drops stains on it. Is this normal? Or should I be worried/aware about something else? Possibly just sloughed skin cells.

@lisatest: Does a puppy have soft poop and as the puppy gets older the poop becomes more solid? It has been a while since I had a puupy so I can't remember. No… a puppy should also have a solid poo...
