Former basenji "owner" from Minnesota here!

Member Introductions
  • Hi!
I have never owned a basenji of my own, but I grew up with 3 different basenjis (so I guess I semi-owned them?), the last of which was just put down recently. A little back story, my parents owned 2 basenjis before I was born, so they have always been around. After those 2 were put down, we got another one when I was 11 or so. We were so excited! She ended up being one heck of a stinker, but she certainly had a huge personality. All those things set aside, my curiosity peaked just the other day when my husband and I were arguing over what kind of dog our neighbors had over. I insisted it was a shiba inu, he insisted it was a basenji. So we went over and asked, we were both wrong… it was a mix between the two! I started searching and ended up here, writing an introduction even though I no longer have a basenji. I look forward to basenji stories on here, as I have a few of my own (who wouldn't!?)

  • Welcome to our community!

  • It must of been nice growing up with them, I,m wondering if you as a child ever used them as a scapegoat to anything you may have done, as they are always getting into something they would be handy to have around as a kid. Were you thinking of getting one yourself or does your experience with them put you off owning your own? I would say you would have enough experience as a child to be able to get the best out of one. You and your husband were both right it was a Shiba and it was a Basenji, wonder what it actually looked like as a mix, interesting. Looking forward to your stories as my boy is only 1 we have yet to write an interesting one(am I asking for trouble or what!).

@karann - The key in my opinion is to visit with Basenjis before you get one... Of course I always recommend that regardless. But for allergies, ask the owners to prepare a small towel that the Basenjis will sleep on for a few days... take that home and put it under your pillow.... will give you a good idea if your allergies will kick up

@vizzy First off, do not put the dogs name.... Some folks put the phone # of your vet. Stafford-Ames Morse [removed email address]

You can help allergic reaction with most breeds by simply grooming regularly and wiping down with even something like baby wipes. But no dog is hypoallergenic. If your allergies are mild you can do what many of us do, just take antihistamines. :) If severe, sadly you should not count on a basenji to no set them off. Some nonshedding dogs do better, but they also have dander and saliva, so they also are NOT hypoallergenic.

Another thing I've done with mine, I use the patio door to get to the garage when we go for rides and the side door of the house when we go for walks (the front door is never used for anything). That way my dogs always head in a certain direction when "escaping" out a particular door. Although a trainer told me not to that (she insisted dogs need to be kept guessing), it has so far worked for me. Even when the two escapes happened, it was in the particular direction for that door.
