First Basenji, some questions.

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi,
I recently bought my first Basenji, he is just great.
I bought him at 12 weeks old (Yes a little late, but he behaves fine, and socializing very well)
Some questions i had is that he is now 13-14 weeks, his tail is'nt really curled, the first day in the house his tail was very low, but i could understand that because the new environment has to be a little stressfull for a puppy.
The tail is'nt really between his legs anymore, and mostly standing up, though it is not really curled "Basenji style".
I have read that some Basenji's have less curly tails than others.
His 2 brothers who were also still for sale at the breeder did have curled tails, we noticed that the one we picked didn't, but we liked his energy.
And i dont really mind if his tail stays like this because he is an awesome dog, but do you think or know some basenji's just grow their tails curled a litte later?
Attached a photo of how he mostly carry's his tail.

Any comment or answer about him will be appreciated :D

I think that in the future that it would be important to get a blood sample when or just after she is having the episode…. if it was a plant, critter bite... by now the toxic substance would most likely be gone.

Both Sugar and Dimisi are fastidious cleaners of their private parts. Every once in a while-Shadow doesn't really like cleaning himself-I put a little corn syrup(I'm talking about a dabbing of it) around his private area to facilitate himself cleaning himself.

@etzbseder: While I've got people looking at this, my B also has a minor umbilical hernia, I was wondering, how big of an issue is it, and should I get him fixed. Do the potential problems get overweighed by the benefits? That is usually not a big deal. The majority of Basenjis are born with umbilical hernias. Should you get him fixed? As in neutered? Yes. Should you get the hernia fixed? They could do it when they neuter him if it bothers you…but it isn't a health concern unless it is quite big.

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.
