Making Bed & Furniture Off Limits?

    Has anybody else had to move a B from the people bed to a crate? How'd it go? How long does it take the dog to adjust? And will this even stop the peeing problem?

    I have a couple of questions. Did she void when she was out and did you see that she had? Hard to have a full bladder if you have just emptied it. Don't discount a UTI until you check again. I know (from personal experience!) these things can come on suddenly, as in "I did not have this problem last week!" Also 16 1/2 months could be just about right for "adolescence" to be setting in, so yeah, could be behavioral. Have there been any changes in routine that might "piss her off"? (pun intended!)

    As far as moving her from bed to crate, I did that with my two girls back in the day, but they slept together in a chair, with a cover over them. I made the change in summer so they would not be cold, and they didn't fuss too much about it as far as I can recall. Wouldn't have wanted to try it with just one.

    Is she coming into season? Zest! would pee in her crate when she was starting to come into season. And Z! did come into season 2X a year.

    (I can't remember if she'd been spayed yet or not.)

    Otherwise, i'd start doing more obedience work with her, and do some nothing in life is free (google if needed). My sofa (loveseat) had 2 dog beds on them and I don't think anyone has ever peed on them, but they'd be easy enough to toss into the washer.

    Hi eeeefarm– I did see Ava pee when she was out, though I now know that she didn't empty her bladder. I can retest, but Ava has had so many UTIs than I can usually tell. But you're right, it's best to be thorough.

    Nothing has changed in her life and she isn't "pissed" at me, that I know of. She did have a full vet workup last week and was cleared healthwise.

    Yes, I did wonder about this!

    We did NILIF all last year and still do, to a large degree. We also do obedience training 2x/ day and will continue.

    I have never had a B pee on the bed except Arwen, and although only about 4 times in her life, all were on days she was on steroids. If I had it to do over again, as much as I love them in the bed, I'd love one of those side beds, lol. Hope you figure out what is up with her.

    Acepromazine is a drug I will never ever give to a dog again. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=570 I agree with Shirley, it seems very fearful. Sadly, that's often a trait you can work to help control, but it is something your dog simply may be born with. You can work on desensitizing to vet... by doing by, let them toss a treat, go home. Do it for quite a while. Ditto on muzzle.. do it at home for a few mins, take off and treat. Work on making both as unstressful as possible. But better to muzzle than have a bite incident.

    I'll just add something here. 1. Congratulate your husband on his outlook. His positive attitude is the core of his being. 2. Congrats on the new couch. Not to put a damper on, but mine absolutely DESTROYED one that was given to me. I'm thinking of duct tape in colors as an accessory at this point because the boxer likes to lay on that couch. 3. Mine destroyed every second hand couch I brought into my home. However, a year and a half ago, I bought a new couch and they never bother it in the least! Good luck and congrats again on the new sofa!

    My Arnie who is 9 chews and destuffs bedding. He sleeps on the stuffing in his crate. I have been doing this since he was young.

    Ryan is such a cute baby! I hope your article gets published. I have enjoyed reading about how you adjusted your family to include the baby, of course a lot depends on the humans and I think you and Kas are exceptional in that regard. YOu have good dogs to start with, but I think including them in the pregnancy has kept them from being jealous of Ryan. Whatever you are doing, it will be a gift to share that with others!

    We were doing really good with keeping our B out of the bed when we first got him. However, my fiance is the light sleeper and was responsible for kicking him out of bed. In contrast I am a very heavy sleeper and wouldn't feel Colbey climbing in bed when Ed wasn't home. Colbey learned very quickly that he could sleep in the bed when Ed was gone. And then, winter came. We keep the house pretty cool and Colbey would climb in the bed shivering, and that was the end of my resolve to keep the dog out of the bed. So now, the rule of the house is, animals are allowed in the bed, but only on my side. Needless to say, I have about 1/4 of the bed…... but, I am a cuddler, so I am ok with it. We are keeping our other dog out of the bed, mostly because there would be no more space left for me!

    Thanks for the advice foschatt! As I mentioned, my family went out of town for two weeks to Sweden. While they were away Dallas continues to sleep in my room while the other two dogs slept in my parent's room. Dallas' behavior greatly diminished during the two weeks. The first 3 mornings or so he would whine & pace. However, as he realized that the other dogs were not being fed until I got up either, he started sleeping in more. I really do think he wakes up & wants out when he hears my step dad getting up for work. My stepdad feeds the other two dogs [we tried having him not feed Dallas] around 5 AM when he is getting ready for work. Therefore, it is someone being up that has been causing him to wake up & whine to be let out. There is still a chance I may start putting him back in his crate to sleep. Problem is, he is kept crated during the day so I don't really find it fair for him to do both. I'm still working on it I suppose… He's gotten better but now that they are back in town he has already begun to regress. sigh Around 2 AM my stepdad let our family dogs out & in the process Dallas woke up & basically wouldn't go back to bed afterwards. I let him outside to pee for like 15 minutes. However, when we came back into the house he kept whining & pacing again. He didn't end up finally falling back asleep until after 3 AM! I am quite tired this AM I must say...
