I'm Rocco. I'm a rescue and I'm working on my biting problem in North Carolina.

  • Hi everyone. My new basenji's name is Rocco. I got him from BRAT two months ago. He's been great so far he just gets bitey during play.

Still working on potty training too. I think he was trained on pee pads because he keeps going on my rugs at home. He's trying to find his place and establish more consistency with me. I love these forums and appreciate everyone advice!

    Thanks!

  • Hi Rocco and Melyssa, beautiful black and white. My boy Kaiser took a fancy to our rug during toilet training so we removed the rug so there was no smell to confuse him as you really need to get rid of the smell or they keep going back. Invest in a good cleaner that removes the stain as well as the odour. Just be consistent with training and before you know it things will settle. They are very smart it's just finding what methods work for you and Rocco.

  • Welcome! He looks like a bundle of energy. When he gets rough during play, the play ceases. No more fun if you feel teeth or he tugs on your clothing. He will figure out that you don't like the rough stuff and will learn that gentle play is the way to go. Patience and consistency will help him figure this out. :)

  • When they are with their littermates and any adults, during play when they bite to hard, the one getting bite will scream at the biter… and adults will strongly correct... this is when they learn "soft" bite... so sounds like your Rocco did not get this... This happens if removed from the adults and/or other littermates too early... So as stated, all play stops... also, I suggest that if the bite is too hard, scream/yell very loud and then stop all play

Hello again after a very long absence!! My 'chewing' boy now leaves his coat alone - his Mum (now spayed) wears his old hand-me-down coat, and he has his onw snazzy camoflage polar fleece jumper that I made. Can't possibly have it off thankyou!! His half-brother Jerry had his first coat on today - also a 'chewer' - we'll see if it is still on in the morning. Jerry's sister Chloe also got one on today after I managed to keep her still enough to pull it over her head!! Jerry is NOT allowed to touch it thank you!! @kiwir: The thing that annoys me is that he always wore a coat as a puppy - he's just turned 12 months now. But boys being boys, in the last few weeks he thought Mum had come back in season (she hadn't!) so in frustration he gradually chewed her coat - from the back forward - left the polar fleece around her shoulders and chest and neck. And the silly girl just let him - looking at him indulgently - "My boy" I tried making them without the polar neck (designed to stop chewing of the front) - or reinforced them with thick cotton tape - and that lasted a little longer. Now he just looks at me with those eyes saying "Hell, I'm freezing Mum!"

Took Ramsey to a dog park today, first time. He did very well, no fights and there was around 20 dogs there running loose. He did hold his ground with every dog and even pushed the line a little with some of the larger dogs. All in all a good day for Rams! We have never really trusted him or the other dogs enough to take him to a dog park but today we said what the heck and Ramsey showed us that he can socialize with the best of them. Chris

@youngandtired: Hi! Welcome to the Basenji Forum, this is a great place for chatting about our furbabies, and getting information. So, your baby is 4, please tell me that they will stop chewing, and surfing the tables. My Sahara, would be just great if she didn't do this. I love her just the same, but I have lost things I can't get back that she has chewed. My Basenjis right now range in age from 12 1/2 to 15 3/4…. :p They still surf, however they have pretty much stopped chewing... :D But that is just cause they are old.... and the teeth are not as great!

Hi and welcome! When you let her out, I hope you are out also. Sadly, underground fencing is very dangerous… call the closest 10 shelters to find how many dogs they pick up with collars. They get excited, run through it, then can't come back. Also, while it might normally keep your dog in, it won't keep others OUT. But with supervision, they are GREAT so that they get freedom but you are there if a problem arises.
