Meet Maximus!

  • Hi everyone!! We adopted this little booger from the Animal Foundation on Friday.

Maximus, or Max for short, is a Basenji mix. Our guess is part German Shepherd, but who knows! He's a big boy, weighing in at about 53 pounds and about a head taller than purebred Basenjis. Max was an owner surrender due to a relocation/new landlord not allowing pets. He's INCREDIBLY smart, and definitely did not get the Basenji's inability to bark. He gets very excited when he sees other dogs so gets quite vocal. He also has a bit of separation anxiety, which is to be expected. Had to leave our neighbors a letter and some candy begging for forgiveness while we work on that.

When we picked Max up, he only barely knew "sit." Now he knows sit, down, stay, "go to your room" and leave/drop it. Of course, only when there's nothing around distracting him. Work in progress :) He is just the biggest sweetheart though!

  • Max certainly looks eager to learn! How old is he? If you are correct about the German Shepherd part, it will be interesting to see what traits are dominant, the GSD willingness to please, or the Basenji tendency to please themselves! It would certainly appear he has inherited the Shepherd urge to bark! In any case, he is a handsome lad. :)

  • He is! I can really see both sides of it depending on his mood. Sometimes you can see the internal struggle in his face…it's the funniest thing. He'll hear a command and have this look on his face as though he's thinking, "...I want to do it...but I also kind of don't want to..." and after a bit of thinking he'll either plop his butt down or waltz off.

  • What a CUTIE! Thanks for adopting!

@tanza Oh yes. I give her 1/3 cup blue buffalo puppy kibble, 1 tbsp wet blue buffalo puppy, 1 tbsp yogurt or cottage cheese, (alternating) and if I se any sign of dandruf or dryness in her fur, I also add in a few drops of olive oil. I have chicken and vegetables every night, and I've been preparing my chicken unseasoned since I got rogue so I can use it for training on occasion, so sometimes if she's being stubborn I'll bury some tiny shreds of chicken in her food to get her to eat, or sometimes I'll do the same thing with some other high value treats. I don't feed her in a crate, but I've moved her bowl into my room so she's lessdistracted at mealtime, and she has a safe place to eat when my niece comes over. Rogue plays nice with my niece outside, but indoors, she's kind of a really big squeeky toy, so we have to watch her constantly. I also, on the rarest occasions, will give her a little tiny pinch of american, or sharp cheddar cheese. That seems to get her really excited. She doesn't get excited about cottage cheese, but american or sharp cheddar? She goes nuts. fagedabodit. And she get chews and kongs in the crate, but never meals. And she doesn't spend much time in there anymore since she's been house trained. She just sleeps in my bed. In fact, she's passed out next to me right now.

@doggonecrazy said in Meet Rambo!: Did you check for connected toes? Also, I would like to know a reputable dog DNA company who includes Basenji in their database. Typically, the more dogs in their testing, the more accurate. Thus far, Mars Wisdom Panel 3 has the largest group, including basenji and coyote and breeds most the others don't, making it the most affordable and most accurate UNLESS you want to pay out $200. In which case the newer Embark seems truly spectacular. Whatever you use, make sure they have basenji in their data bank. Most don't. http://www.dogbreedidentifier.com/embark-dog-dna-test-revi…/ http://www.theverge.com/…/embark-dog-dna-startup-disease-ri… http://fortune.com/2015/06/25/dog-dna-tests/

@elbrant No jet lag..one poster said also tribe, response wasn't hunt truffles, basenji hunt Chaga, it was hunt " the" Chaga. The op didn't disagree with my interpretation, another defended it as taste,, which wouldn't be an issue if the indication was mushrooms. But considering the massive insertions into my comments by kindle the last months, I should not have locked on it. Posts deleted. Thanks. Giving benefit of doubt should always take priority....or ask for clarification.

@tanza: And he still loves (or I should say) his Big Sister, Crystal still thinks he is pretty cool… LOL.... Thanks Andrea.... Andrea?... will you make the Nationals? I am really hoping to. My tentative plan right now is to fly out with just Ethan, and maybe one dog. Then Ethan can stay with my sister in Portola Valley, and I can just enjoy the National :) Tim has offered to stay home with the dogs, to save money…but he may change his mind by the time it actually rolls around :) We had originally planned to drive across with ALL dogs, and Ethan...and quickly realized that kind of roadtrip with a three year old would be insanity!
