Good place to board?

Basenji Talk
  • I'm going to be traveling for work for 3 days next week and need someone to help take care of her…I can bring her to the hotel but I would only be able to come back during lunch during the work day...I called one place (recommended by my vet)...and they said she gets 3 walks about 15-20min long but other than that...she'll be in a kennel...is it good for her to be in a kennel for long periods of time? She's only 13 weeks

  • Can you get a dog sitter? I have dog walkers who also do overnight visits, and they are great! When I have to be away, someone is here with my guy all night, he gets a walk in the morning, someone is here at lunch time for an hour plus another walk, then if I am away more than one day she comes back at 4 p.m., walks him again, and stays overnight. Works great. Maybe someone in your area does something similar??

  • How about your breeder?…
If not.. then a sitter that stays at your house

Just wanted to give an update on my experience and hope that it helps others in the future. So I did get the puppy and have had her now for about 6-7 weeks. She is doing AWESOME! Shes completely healthy, and at 14-15 weeks, is incredibly obedient. For instance, I take her to the dog park, and she recalls every time I say "Nani come." There are also some agility obstacles in the park which I'm starting to train her on and she does really well with simple things like walking up, down, sitting, staying, gonig through the tunnels, etc… When I give her her food, I make her sit, stay, and give me a fist bump before she can eat, and I'll switch the order up every time. I then say "now you can have it" and then she eats. Its to the point now, where she is in the kitchen, and I'll go to my room, come back in 2-3min, and she is still sitting by the food and hasn't even touched it yet until I give the command. She is doing fantastic! Fantastic with other dogs, fantastic with kids, adults, everything. She doesn't have a tendency anymore either now to chew on things she's not supposed to and when she does get the urge, she looks for her toys. Not sure if this is just because the breed itself is very intelligent, or the breeder, or a mix of both but I couldn't have asked for a better puppy, especially the way she is now at the age of 14-15 weeks. My allergies also do very well around her whcih is HUGE! Not sure if I just got lucky or what, but she is great a puppy for how obedient she is already, her compassion, and her behavior. Just simply amazing :-)

I'm sorry to hear things were less than ideal :( I'm all settled in Lakewood now, and I do have plenty of room for multiple crates & dogs, so keep me in mind in if you go on vacation without your basenjis in the future. Hope they recover soon.

I just boarded Tiggy and Reggie for one night, Reggie has been boarded before and Tiggy and him were in the same suite. They both did great and they had no problems and had no issues noted on their cards.

Mine like the Buster Cube, and similar balls that hold kibble. Also stuffed animals (garage sales, thrift stores), and the anmials that make repeating noises with a squeeze. Nicky likes baby toys, like the ones that you pull a cord and it plays music. They have favotire stuffed toys they have had for years, and others die quickly. Nicky loves to steal my shoes and eat them, my husband bought her a purse of her own at a garage sale, lovely leather. She has been slowly working on it for many months, knows it is HERS. Mine have almost never liked real dog toys. Anne in Tampa

OMG….this film was the catalyst that started my daughter on her quest for a Basenji. For years and years I had to endure the Walter Brennan character saying, 'She's got birds. SHE'S GOT BIRDS'. I think that's why we finally caved and got our first B. We never wanted to see that movie again!!! In hind sight, the cheezy movie was MUCH easier to take than a Basenji pup. I'm looking for the book on line---just for my collection of B. ephemera.
