    O boy, my heart jumped a bit…..

    This is going to be the start of a very difficult breeding season to get through! All year long I convince myself that everything is just fine with Oakley and I; then the minute I see something like this I'm like "oh, yea...I want another one!"

    Oh this is so tempting…we definitely want another one, preferably tri or brindle. Just have been going back and forth about whether to get another puppy or not.

    Lmao…I just can't help myself!! Every breeding season that passes without getting another seems to get me more and more crazy! I can't buy a house soon enough, seriously...

    I may have to take a leave of absence from the forum if I continue to be this mentally incapacitated by basenji puppies

    I've never been so mesmerized by basenji puppies. My heart tears into two- the side that says "how can I not" and the side that says "do you remember how difficult Oakley was?!"

    I was told basenjis are like potato chips, you ant have just one…and it's the truest saying I've ever heard!!!

    Why oh why don't I avoid the forums from Oct til about … well heck, won't help cause even if I miss the puppy announcements (btw, where are the pictures?), I still see the new puppy owner's pics and yearn. Congrats. :)

    Apparently, because of the pandemic, puppies and kittens are in short supply everywhere, and since female basenjis generally only have one litter a year, you might have to wait even longer. The theory behind the shortage of puppies and kittens (and even older dogs and cats) is that because of lockdowns, etc people are lonely for companionship.

    @shankara Oh yes, I've heard the stories! :) Our first basenji chewed through the seatbelt of my mom's car on a road trip. He turned into a wonderful and patient dog though. I'm certainly looking into BRAT too.

    A quick google search yielded this site: www.eurobreeders.com. Search breeds, then B, then look for Basenji. There where many breeders that popped up including a couple in Italy, which isn’t too far I suppose. I have no idea about Basenji breeding in Europe though. Do your homework.

    Please make sure the puppies you sell are clear of fanconis. Its an awfull illness and no one wants to have a sick dog.

    I would look at the BCOA site for reputable breeders in your area, but don't be quick to rule out others. A lot of good breeders have all their puppies spoken for by now, so that will make your search much harder. But keep looking and don't be afraid to contact folks from all over. The most important thing is to find a good breeder that you can work with personally, and one who does significant health testing, including the new DNA marker for fanconi. A happy healthy puppy and supportive relationship with a breeder are priceless! I do know some folks will ship, but the best thing to do is go out and get the dog. You will probably want to meet the breeder and litter, and they will want to meet you. That way you can get a better feel for each other and both still have an "out" if things don't seem right. For about the same price as shipping a dog, you can get a plane ticket yourself to get them. It usually only costs about $50 or so to add the dog in cabin on your return trip. And then you are in complete control the whole time of what is happening to your puppy. Also sometimes breeders that live outside your area still have ways to make transportation arrangements. You can always check. They know other breeders that live between you two and can meet up with them at shows or events to get the puppy closer to it's new home, or within a reasonable driving distance of you. My first dog came from Georgia, but I only had to go to KY to get him. :)
