    Hello,
    We are Kees-Jan Donkers and Anne-Marie Mulder from Marken, The Netherlands (a former island, north of Amsterdam).
    Last year March we got Lela (26 December 2010, Honey Money's Elinor) as a pup, and in September her older sister (13 January 2010, Honey Money's Bintu) joined us.
    Their parents are Abotere's Khamau and Two of a Kind's Lulu.
    We never had a dog before and we never wanted anything but a basenji - people warned us but we did it anyway - and it's been a very fulfilling journey ever since.
    They are very different characters: Lela the happy-go-lucky I-love-everybody-and-everybody-loves-me princess of play, and Binti the more reserved but very loyal companion (I suspect she would make a fine hunting dog). We are madly in love with them and since we both are home a lot (work and study) have a lot of interaction around the clock - they really do love the sun and cuddling up on your lap or check out what we're doing.

    B's are very rare over here, so we get a lot of attention of people of all ages. Fortunately we live in an area with several off-leash possibilities, so they get a good workout every morning - lots of birds to chase. We admire their stamina and the athletic outmanoeuvering of bigger dogs.

    Thanks so much for sharing the links. I really liked the videos - you have a lovely garden out back. Are those pears growing in the trees? They look delicious! I agree with you, basenjis are fast and can outrun many dogs, but they do have the incredible ability to change direction very quickly, outsmarting whoever is running after them, both dog and human!

    Yes, they are pears and we have an apple tree, too. Last year we had a huge harvest - this spring it was very cold, so we'll have to see.
    Fortunately Lela and Binti respond well when we call them - as long as there is no irritation whatever in our voices.

    @julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

    @msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!

    yes now i remember, it is Abrazo from HUngary, I know the owner of Sultan ( actually his pet name is Don ;) ) thanks for your information! and yes it was Solar and a little duckling :) so cute, I think she still hates me for taking it to the bird shelter ;)
