How often should I give my puppies their "Mush"?

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • They turned 3wks on Friday. Mom's spending less time with them and less time nursing. I was reading online you can start giving them "Mush" at 3wks. Ive been giving it to them once a day. Is that too little times? They LOVE the mush and pig out and get themselves covered in it lol. Ive found small shallow brownie tins work great. Since I have 9 pups total I got 3 and put 3 to a tin.

  • Depending on how often Mom is nursing, you should at least be offering 3 to 4x's a day. Try and gage it to what they will finish up and not leave much untouched. Be sure that you offer water 24/7.

3 to 4 wks is when Mom's start to spend so time away from them since now they are starting to get teeth…..

  • Puppy teeth, no wonder… Poor mom! 9 mouths with needle sharp razors- she deserves a medal!

  • Yeah ive felt the needles…they are def. getting teeth now! She doesnt nurse as often anymore and is ALWAYS wanting to be away from them. I have to put her in the kitchen myself with them or she'd stay away 24/7. They seem to have no interest in water right now. But its always available.

Im not sure what DEFRA is but I read somewhere that the quarantine and all that had been lifted in great Britain… Not sure.. Anyway, I'm not sure if they do.. But dogs are imported into Brittain all the time, especially show dogs, I don't think it would be tool difficult. cheers happy New Year!

Yes, Nicole that would be good info to add…. but that is going too far at this point. Like Pat said... people have to want to read it. This was just meant to be something that people can START with... Those are basic pages that if someone was looking for a basenji, the would be able to see that the BYB or PM they are considering does NOT fit into .... hence... not the best place to go. Throwing too much info at a person so quickly will be more than enough to make them turn and head for the hills... or buy the first puppy they see... then come looking for help with all it's problems later. Thanks for all of the great ideas. I will go to the limited time for feeding and may start to mix in a little wet good as well. I have begun some train with her but was told I have to wait for all of her shots to take her to obedience classes. She has her third set this monday and then the last ones in three weeks. I have almost got her to sit, she does it if she knows I have a treat but struggles if I just come out of the blue and tell her to sit. We're working on it.

See, that's why I have no problem recommending Jumoke to potential Basenji owners {slaves, whatever}. Everything is so thorough. After talking more w/Bryan, I am in the process of switching Jazzy to Eukanuba low-fat diet because he felt that while she was getting enough puppy chow to maintain a healthy weight, she was not getting chow every day to fulfill her nutrient requirements. {she has a tendency to chunk up, and he was unaware of the quantity of food she ate each day}. He did the research for me, and recommended the food that he feels will most benefit her – and she likes it. She is getting Pet-Tabs also. I'm glad the question came up because otherwise I would have never gotten around to discussing her diet w/him. So, a big Thank you to Bryan for all his hard work, and also to whoever it was that posted the original question and got the discussions going!
