How often should I give my puppies their "Mush"?

    They turned 3wks on Friday. Mom's spending less time with them and less time nursing. I was reading online you can start giving them "Mush" at 3wks. Ive been giving it to them once a day. Is that too little times? They LOVE the mush and pig out and get themselves covered in it lol. Ive found small shallow brownie tins work great. Since I have 9 pups total I got 3 and put 3 to a tin.

    Depending on how often Mom is nursing, you should at least be offering 3 to 4x's a day. Try and gage it to what they will finish up and not leave much untouched. Be sure that you offer water 24/7.

    3 to 4 wks is when Mom's start to spend so time away from them since now they are starting to get teeth…..

    Yeah ive felt the needles…they are def. getting teeth now! She doesnt nurse as often anymore and is ALWAYS wanting to be away from them. I have to put her in the kitchen myself with them or she'd stay away 24/7. They seem to have no interest in water right now. But its always available.

    I know too many puppies and dogs injured or killed due to collars left on unattended. Not worth the risk.

    Like much internet advice I find short answers incomplete - and mine was. I really want to ad that making a crate/xpen/gated puppy area should never be seen as "punishment". These partitioned puppy areas should be conditioned to be safe places for a puppy/dog. Mine, thankfully, tolerates and even likes her xpens probably because it's where she eats, receives treats, sleeps, chews and even plays. This took about a week or so. Now she voluntarily goes into her xpens (in my case) on her own and when she's put there involuntarily she might whine for a minute before settling down with a chew and/or going to sleep.

    @giza1: Heck, I never fed my puppies mush either, just softened kibble. And it didn't seem to take very long before the pups would be sitting in the mom's dog dish chewing on her dry kibble. -Joanne When you think about it… softened kibble is mush.... just all depends on how you offer it. And I only do "mush" between 3 to 4 wks after that it is just softened kibble... and in the end.. that is mush

    My Basenji doesn't have slaves, he has staff! :) And he lets us know when our work isn't up to snuff.

    Thanks for all of the great ideas. I will go to the limited time for feeding and may start to mix in a little wet good as well. I have begun some train with her but was told I have to wait for all of her shots to take her to obedience classes. She has her third set this monday and then the last ones in three weeks. I have almost got her to sit, she does it if she knows I have a treat but struggles if I just come out of the blue and tell her to sit. We're working on it.
