More questions from a potential new owner

  • Again, I urge you to look for more health testing then just Fanconi. While that is of course important, it is not the only problem we have in our breed.

And as a breeder, you have to ask yourself, what does this dog/bitch has to offer the breed? Breeders breed to improve the breed, not to just produce puppies. While it is not a must that you show your dogs, it is the best way to get other opinions if you are breeding to the Basenji Standard not only in conformation, but health and temperament. Same with performance events, while not a must, again it is a great way to know if you are breeding to the Basenji Standard.

Will these pups be AKC registered? Does she sell with a spay/neuter contract? These are all legit questions and ones included in the link that I sent you which was developed by The Basenji Club of America (Parent Breed Club).

@basenji_life The vet can manipulate to see if something severe is wrong, but hips xrays need to wait til 6 mos (OFA) or (I think.. too tired to look) 4 mos.. oh heck I have to look.. "The PennHIP method can be reliably performed on a dog as young as 16 weeks old."

Exactly, and if you can't get the food, then get some good probiotic like fastrack and give it with meals… will probably be fine. :)

@sbaker: Is this something we have a chance of him over coming so he we be able to show in the breed ring Exactly like Nemo says.. you need to take your time and get him used to strangers without forcing him…. But it will take time .... and you can not force the situation Who is his breeder if you don't mind sharing?

Sophie is one who definately thinks that the standard reads "a goof with strangers". She loves meeting and greeting people and dogs though she has learned how to be dog appropriate and is not a push over. She wags her tail so much it is no wonder is is only a loose single curl, how could it be anything else with it in constant motion. We do a lot to socialize all of our pups so they are outgoing and confident but there is a definate distinction between some of our pups who would probably be considered "Aloof" though they are friendly and like attention from strangers, they always make you feel like you are attending court for royalty and Sophie whose dream job would probably be a greeter for WalMart.

@Nerthin: I have already signed up for puppy beginners class at Petsmart, my girl friend works there so she gets a free training class. Then I was told after about a year is when you can really get serious about lure coursing and agilities. Lure trials can be great places to socialize a young pup and it is good to introduce them to the sights and sounds of trial. You do not want to overdo but getting them out so they see what is going on can be a good thing. As for agility, you may want to see if you have any pre-agility or puppy agility classes around you. These classes are great at building confidence, they don't have jumps but start laying groundwork for working in agility.
