The birds and the B's

Basenji Talk
  • Thought I would share some experience with basenji's and birds. We have 2 basenjis, 2 & 3 yrs old. We also have 6 birds, mostly rescued or needed a good home. All but one of the birds was here before the dogs came. As pups they were very curious about those caged things. The dogs have been trained to leave the birds alone. Blessedly our dogs have never associated the birds they flush outside as being the same things thats inside. We also know that natural instincts are alive and well in the basenjis of today, so they are never all out together. The wonderful thing that has happened is the birds have each selected a dog to be their own. Since the birds talk, they call them, talk to them and have a love affair going with their dog. Our cockatoo has adopted our littlest basenji. He calls her mournfully when he cant see her, at night when she has gone to bed you have to tell the bird she has gone nite nite or he won't settle down. Those two will go nose to nose while the cockatoo is caged. No bites he just loves her. Our best talker a quaker parrot calls them for supper, tells them outside and when our elder elkie is getting into trouble this bird tattles on him. All of this inner action totally amazes us and it was something we could never have taught them

  • How cute!! I used to have a bare eyed peach headed cockatoo that would just love to torment the dogs. He would run over to them, nip them on teh butt and run to the other end of the couch laughing all the way!!

  • What an awesome story! I wish you could get that on video and share it with us!! How cute!

  • that's too funny!

  • Love your story and love your title, too!!

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

@DebraDownSouth: Great pictures. :( Krunzer, as the aunt of a niece with Downs Syndome, who has served on coalitions for and MHMR boards, I do want to say the use of "retarded" as a slur is really offensive. I cringe over that use as much as I do the "that's gay" comments, or "Jew down on the price" etc. It's just hurtful. And btw, not singling you out and I have also used words common (like gyped and Indian giver) before I really thought about the connection. Just wanted to share my response, not meant as any type of insult to you personally. I am sorry I guess I just did not think when I was writing it. Thank you for pointing it out and I will try to be more courteous in the future. Sometimes things just come out of my mouth(or typing) and I don't think of the connotations first, I really need to try to be more diplomatic on here and in every day life! :)

I'm afraid If I do decide to get another I won't have a chance to introduce them beforehand as it Will probably be a puppy I bring from the US.. I doubt there will be a problem since she will be a young puppy…

I don't keep a collar on Ava unless I'm walking her. Poor Leki's tragic accident is similar to what happened to two Goldens who lived down the street from me. They were in the backyard playing while their owners were away, and the whole block knew immediately that it was awful. This is an old thread, but there's some good info in it. Doggie daycare has been a lifesaver for me. It gives Ava an outlet for her endless energy and is good for socialization. She is a friendly girl who likes everybody– human, canine and feline. I take turns handing her off to everyone there, and so far, she'll go right to them with a hello lick. I want her to know that people are good and she can trust them. Hopefully, it will always be that way!
  • So are these Af's different than our domestic B's?

Jayden is super gross when it comes to what he'll eat: poop, vomit, and, if he pees on the patio, he'll lick that. Honest!!! We feed him and we feed him very well! Yucccchhhhh! Pat
