Lukuru retesting results - Fanconi Syndrome

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Using the temporary linked marker test on the 10 Lukuru's resulted as :

Lukuru na Liboso Mopaya "Probably Clear"
    Lukuru Amisi / Misi "Indeterminate"
Lukuru Lema / Lema "Probably Clear"
    Lukuru MPale / MPale "Indeterminate"
    Lukuru Constellation Cassiopeia "Indeterminate"
    Lukuru Constellation Libra "Indeterminate"
    Lukuru Constellation Orion "Indeterminate"
    Lukuru Constellation Pegasus "Indeterminate"
    Lukuru Constellation Perseus "Indeterminate"
    Lukuru Constellation Ursa "Indeterminate"

Dr. Johnson was very confident all along that we would have confirmation that all of the Lukuru's were clear, but we always respected the BCOA recommendation to treat the Indeterminate reading as a "Carrier."

Most recently, the four native imported foundation stock were retested on new DNA swabs for the direct gene. The six F1 full African littermates were retested from stored DNA.

The results of the direct gene test on the Lukuru's has found :

Lukuru na Liboso Mopaya Clear / Normal
Lukuru Amisi / Misi Clear / Normal
Lukuru Lema / Lema Clear / Normal
Lukuru MPale / MPale Clear / Normal
Lukuru Constellation Cassiopeia for Antefaa Clear / Normal
Lukuru Constellation Libra Clear / Normal
Lukuru Constellation Orion Clear / Normal
Lukuru Constellation Pegasus Clear / Normal
Lukuru Constellation Perseus Clear / Normal
Lukuru Constellation Ursa Clear / Normal

@tuts - Hello tuts, note that the test recommend by OFA comes from the Basenji Club of America as recommended tests and for OFA this will determine if done that Basenji will get a CHIC rating. Note however this does not mean that they were clear, just means that they were tested. Some are test that need to be done yearly. Breed parent clubs for all breeds determine what tests need to be done

@lisastewart: Thats true, I guesss I could get my carrier retested now. Not sure there is a reason to retest the clear as the parents were clear and carrier. Yes there is a reason to retest clears, if you read Dr Johnson's write up from the Nationals, he clearly says that even pClear to pClear could produce Carriers, so a pClear to pCarrier could make that pup a Carrier or even Affected if that pClear turned out to be a Carrier. It is recommended that all potential breeding stock be retested with the direct test. And if I had a pClear to pCarrier regardless if I were considering breeding, I would retest.

@LiveWWSD: Yea, she has quite a bit of African in her Dam's bloodline. Her mother and most of her siblings all test indetermint. I was totally prepaired for the indetermint result, as that seems to be the standard test result for alot of her breeders bloodline. To date none of the Avongara Dogs have had Fanconi and only when crossed with American (include really worldwide Basenjis) has Fanconi cropped up. However there has been ISPID, hips, eye problems with the Avongara imports. Remember that in Africa, there is nature selective breeding for the most part and also remember that you need the gene from both side for Fanconi as it is recessive. If nature selection, could be that if affected they would have died before reproducing.
