Thanksgiving woes…

    Really appreciate the advice everyone, very helpful!

    Debra, thus far he is fantastic with strangers that we encounter, minus the Thanksgiving situation at family parties. So I do hope that the setting matters, and a therapy setting would bring out a 'different,' more work-like Dexter. We are working very hard to prepare him for therapy work, and I work in the hospital, so I won't be taking him nor taking the certification exams until he is ready.

    Dmey, how you described Ayo's actions is near identical to what I encountered last week.

    I will be trying Control Unleashed. I do give an emphatic "NO" for the over-excitement and rough play, but like dmey has explained, it only lasts for a few short minutes. Any way to make this understanding last longer? Should I put him away for a while to settle down when it happens?

    My Arnie does fine at lure coursing events, show events, etc. where things can be noisy and with barking dogs but he does not like screaming playing kids or if they are on skateboards on sidewalks-something about the wheel noise. He also does not like gunshots. I find it odd how some things upset dogs while others do not. I rescued him when he was a pup almost 4 months old so I do not know if kids teased him or since he was born in rural MO if he was near hunting/gunshots.

    Yes, IMO. If he is acting out because he is over-stressed/over-stimulated, the best thing is to remove him from the situation. You also want to pay closer attention to his body language and look for cues that he is getting stressed so you can head off the issues from occurring. I like the Control Unleashed philosophy too, just reading the book gave me a very different perspective on how I looked at my dogs regarding stress and behavior.

    He just sounds stressed to me. Give him frequent breaks from all craziness around the holidays. I don't think it is necessarily fair to expect him to be perfect when all of that activity is going on. One of my dogs gets a stressed more easily than the others so I limit her exposure to large crowds of people, particularly when she is tired. When dogs get stressed, it can get more difficult for them to respond to commands they more reliably respond to under normal circumstances. Plus they can act out.

    I agree about the stress. So, with that in mind, maybe give him a rigorous exercise before the party starts and then, after awhile….the 'break' could be a walk with a number of the guests even around the block to help the trust with the extended number of people in his world! Just a thought!

    I was a little pre-occupied earlier today, and Doodle displayed her displeasure at my constant delays... how? She got up on the sofa and did this little prancing-dancing thing. Like she was saying, "haha, look at me misbehaving". LOL oh yeah.... if that is her "breaking bad", I'm in trouble, she's got my heart!

    @Saving so nice to hear there's other people with the same problem! We have been giving regular baths to our b, so I don't know if that really helped or not. Anyways, it took a while for me to bring Nova again to the dog park, because I was a bit afraid the same situation would happen again. I was there a couple of days ago, and no one tried to hump her. (I must say all dogs had same age approx.) Thank you for your comment replies! :)

    Neutering is not going to help - training is. But a good trainer will train YOU to deal with the dog. If a trainer can get him to behave but you can't - there is little to be gained from paying out money. This is something you should never have allowed to happen, but since it has, I think you should deal with it and @JENGOSMonkey has given you a good idea to start you off. Withdrawing treats is a good idea, but also, get up and walk away. He could be biting to get attention and therefore you withdraw the attention at the first sign of a bite, with a firm NO.

    IMO it is a myth that Basenjis cannot have good manners on a walk. Yes, great if you can do off leash, but when circumstances dictate that a leash is necessary then walking calmly without a lot of drama and pulling should be achievable. Personally I do not like long lines or flex leashes. Or allowing dogs to eat whatever they find on the ground, which can in some cases earn you a trip to the vet or worse. Like most dogs, Basenjis are not overly discriminant about what they will ingest. A short leash and being observant can protect them from unwelcome outcomes. Mental exercise will also go a long way with any dog. But one should have a definite opinion about who is running the show, and it should not be the dog....they are quite willing to take up the position should you abdicate.

    I have never placed a puppy in an apartment. Not particularly by design but it just panned out that way. Even the relatively high percentage I have exported have gone to houses with gardens of some kind and access to lots of exercise. Many of these myths have only really gotten a toe hold since FaceBook and social media generally. I had one potential owner visit a few times before deciding, yes, her allergies did not extend to Basenjis. She had three pups from me over a span of about 15 years before being an established and successful breeder herself. @rhughes89 Well done for wanting to persevere. I am sure that, with the will and the right mind-set, you will prevail !
