Diarrhea in the Kennel

    Our 1.5 year old Basenji, Meeko, has been kennel trained since the day we got him. Recently, we have been coming home to massive poo explosions after an 8 hour day at work. He's done it 3 times in the past month or so and has gotten a clean/negative stool sample result from the vet. We haven't changed his food, nor has he been eating any people food. He isn't getting into things he's not supposed to since he is in his crate. Anyone else having weird bowel issues? Thoughts on what could be causing this?

    went to the vet today. he said i caught it early. he didnt hear anything in his lungs, but his glands were enlarged. he gave him a cough supressant and antibiotics. after putting a humidifier in my room, its really helped his nighttime coughing fits. so he has another apt in a couple weeks. just going to give him lots of rest and his meds. he will be good as new. doc said he's in great shape for his age. could use a teeth cleaning tho! haha

    I totally agreee with Pat - the vet should know what's going on. Also the fact that the diarrhoea is black is a cause for concern, in my opinion.

    Heres some info from the Merck Vet Manual about Giardia. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/21300. I think that yearly checks for giardia is a little much. Like the manual says we usually look for giardia when a young dog comes in with diarrhea. We collect a stool sample (for Giardia a fresh sample is preferred) set up a float and also a direct. I actually just looked at a giardia sample taken from a puppy and Doctor Mark said its also hard to find the protozoa because after exposed to light for an amount of time the giardia loose its mobility and is hard to tell the difference from regular cells in the stool. The manual says that treatment with fenbendazole (panacur) is used this also deworms for a number of different zoonotic parasites. Which you should discuss with your vet when doing boosters and every couple of week check ups. According to the CAPC your vet should "Conduct fecal examinations two or four times during the first year of life and one to two times per year in adults, depending on patient health and lifestyle factors." http://www.capcvet.org/recommendations/guidelines.html

    @AJs: Wow. I guess AJ has a cast-iron stomach. He only gets loose when he gets ahold of something off the ground. Or if I mistakenly feed him pork. He eats Pinnacle with a little gravy or occasionally a raw egg. Hope your girl feels better soon. Not unusual for the girls to go off a bit when they are coming in season… least not in my experience But to answer Petra's question, I have not seen that it would really be an indication

    You could try a little yogurt. Cook up some yams in place of the rice.

    How is C3PO doing? I read this thread late, but if he's not okay try going to the vet and asking for a broad spectrum wormer. The one that Nala had was a one-time banana smelling (and I guess tasting) one. My vet told me sometimes giardia, etc. can be missed on the fecal test and it doesn't hurt to worm them (provided the rest of the exam checks out okay). That helped Nala immensely. She gained weight and hasn't had diarrhea at all. Sharon
